Political icons of both major political parties have brought this nation and others together to achieve a common goal. The policies that have been the product of these coalitions have promoted more stable international relations. When the United States plays an active role in international affairs there is an increase in humanitarian work, freedom around the world and global peace. United States hegemony is a net-beneficial method of achieving international stability. The United States has brought about an the largest amount of human rights work in the global community. President Reagan used United States hegemony to promote peace around the world. Reagan’s foreign policy has been copied by Republicans from Rand Paul to George W. Bush. Reagan used hegemony to bankrupt the U.S.S.R, implement NATO and stop the spread Communism. All of these policies led to a more stable international community. Reagan firstly built up America’s military to superior strength when elected to the White House in 1980. With this new leverage he used the NATO agreement of 1949 to move Cruise and Pershing missiles into Western Europe, within striking distance of Russia. This threat caused the U.S.S.R to return to the negotiating table after walking out of the Geneva peace talks of the 1960s, this time to discuss removing their own missiles (Thatcher 161) Then President Reagan worked with England to remove Qaddafi’s murderous regime from power. Lastly Reagan extended a helping hand to infant nations just coming out from underneath the thumb of the Soviet Union (Thatcher 162). This Reagan hegemony led to Russian withdrawal from the Middle East, specially Afghanistan. The biggest example of when Reagan used hegemony to protect world peace is when he ended the Cold War with his famous words, “Mr Gorbachev, tear down this wall!” Ronald Reagan
