The United Nations Fifty-one countries established the United Nations also known as the UN on October 24, 1945 with the intentions of preserving peace through international cooperation and collective security. Over the years the UN has grown in numbers to include 185 countries, thus making the organization and its family of agencies the largest in an effort to promote world stability. Since 1954 the UN and its organizations have received the Nobel Peace Prize on 5 separate occasions. The first in 1954 awarded to the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Geneva, for its assistance to refugees, and finally in 1988 to the United Nations Peace-keeping Forces, for its peace-keeping operations. As you can see, the United Nations efforts have not gone without notice. The UN has made strides toward and continues to fight for world peace, but this however is not the only function of the agency. Environmental protection, Human rights, health and medical research, alleviation of poverty and economic development, emergency and disaster relief, and labor and workers' rights are just a sample of what the UN continues to battle as the year 2000 approaches. The United Nations has made many achievements since the agreement made in 1945. The efforts of the UN helped end the apartheid in South Africa allowing the citizens of South Africa equal participation in the Elections of April 1994 followed by a consensus in choosing a form of government. 90 percent of children in developing countries attend school and 60 percent of adults in these countries can read and write thanks to the UN and the struggle to improve education in developing countries. Over 300 international treaties have been created through United Nations efforts to strengthen international law. These achievements and many others encourage people like myself to promote and praise the United Nations. Without the UN the world would be a bigger place full of confusion and hatred. The efforts of this world organization have improved global life for all of its citizens and will continue to do so for many years to come.
every nation in the world belongs to the United Nations. The United Nations has four purposes: to maintain international peace and security; to develop friendly relations among nations; to cooperate in solving international problems and in promoting respect for human rights; and to be a center for harmonizing the actions of nations. The United Nations is not a world government though, and it does not make laws.
The formation of the United Nations in 1945 marked a monumental success in the international political realm. It was founded to foster relations with its member and non-member states, encourage the respect of human rights, and fight to solve social, economic, and humanitarian issues. However, of all of these motives, its foundation was based primarily on creating peace and preventing conflict between members. The idea of collective security in the UN has become the heart of peace keeping within the union and all members vow to preserve peace and eliminate identified aggressors. Chapter VII of the UN charter is the impetus behind collective security and provides the legal foundation for the UN to eradicate all threats to the peace.
...ractices of other branches of power that the UN cannot grasp upon. In contrast, the virtues of the UN remain undeniably consistent throughout history, but the powers and legislative action the organization fluctuates due to the constant uprising of conflict. However, throughout the history of the 20th century and post Cold – War conflict, the organization's extensiveness has increased, such through the actions of the Non-proliferation treaty of nuclear weapons, and the ongoing tasks of UN Peacekeeping missions. These actions reflected upon the UN fiasco of the Cold War, demonstrate the emerging “politico-economic” society, by laying a prodigious impact of the world via its numerous stretches of the organization.
The United Nations was formed on October 24, 1945, after the Holocaust, to prevent genocide from ever happening again. A cartoon depicted by Michael Sutherland illustrates the unsuccessful intent of the United Nations. The United Nations is pictured standing over the graves of countries and groups that have suffered from genocide. However, many genocides have taken place since the formation of the United Nations (i.e. the Bosnian genocide). Both genocides began as simple misconceptions or dislikes between peoples but ended in tragic and unnecessary murder.
On October 24, 1945 the United Nations was established as a means of preserving global peace after the Second World War. Launching with 51 member states the organizations began on a healthy platform with the United States having an active role in its promotion of international co-operation. However, during the cold war the organization began to experience a plethora of new challenges which primarily involved armed conflicts throughout the world. It soon became apparent that to maintain the peace and effectively deal with dangerous conflicts, the member states would be required to go beyond the Security Council. In 1956 the UN implemented the Peace Process Initiative as a means to ambitiously combat the Suez Crisis, thus creating the world’s first peacekeeping force. With this being the first peacekeeping mission ever deployed by the United Nations, it was met with a significant learning curve as many of the soldiers were given dated equipment, and did not have the means to maintain stability due to lack of funds from each of their respective member states. Though there has been a significant evolution of peacekeeping, with many new monitoring functions, the UN has yet to incorporate technologies into its operations thus far. As observers, technology allows for coverage to be made at a safe distance, providing a greater means of information and security for peacekeeping forces and civilian personnel. Technology can also aid in the progression of peacekeeping operations, as monitoring technologies allow for greater observation, while helping to diminish a feeling of intrusiveness. To advance peacekeeping, operations must be provided with the appropriate technological assets in order to effectively maintain peace throughout the world...
After the conclusion of the Second World War, the United Nations (UN) replaced the ineffective League of Nations and its job was to protect humans rights and prevent future wars like World War 2. The “Big Three” — who were US President Franklin D. Roosevelt, British prime minister Winston Churchill, and Joseph Stalin, leader of the Soviet Union— held a meeting in the soviet city of Yalta to discuss terms for the up coming peace treaty, which included talks about a “world organization.” “This organization— which Churchill, Roosevelt, and Stalin said was essential ‘to prevent aggression and to remove political, economic, and social causes of war through close and continuing collaboration of all peace-loving peoples’ — was to be called the United Nations (Patterson 7).” The United Nations is one of the first steps towards the idea of globalization. That the entire world is beginning to connect on social, political, and economic levels and now with the United Nations this process directly connects with the governments involved in the UN to help countries in social, economic, and/or political turmoil.
The United Nations (UN) was established at the end of World War II, in order to promote co-operation between nations. The UN replaced the failed and ineffective League of Nations; its goal was to prevent future conflicts. In the beginning, the Cold War was the main international topic so the United Nations spent most of its attention on preventing the United States and the Soviet Union from entering into a major war. In the after math of the Cold War many countries gained their independence, as states in Africa were being decolonized there was hostility between ethnic populations. The UN has been involved in sixty peace operation throughout the world since its inception. Two of the peace missions were launched in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The United Nations Organization in the Congo (ONUC) during the Cold War, and the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUC) in the early 2000’s with it currently still ongoing.
The war in Kosovo has killed more than two thousand people and forced more than four hundred thousand from their homes. The United Nations and NATO are two organizations in this world that are working extremely hard to accomplish their goals, one step at a time. Maybe someday, the world will be a peaceful place and well have the United Nations and The North Atlantic Organization to thank for it.
Fifty-eight years after the signing of the Charter, the world has changed dramatically. Its universal character and comprehensiveness make the United Nations a unique and indispensable forum for governments to work together to address global issues. At the same time, there remains a large gap between aspiration and real accomplishment. There have been many successes and many failures. The United Nations is a bureaucracy that struggles – understandably – in its attempt to bring together 191 countries. It must come at no surprise, therefore, that a consensus cannot always be reached with so many different competing voices.
1. As far as peace keeping methods go, the reputation of the United Nations is very pitiable. This is not only because they have not been doing their job to it’s fullest extent, but also because the member states on the security council haven’t given the UN the power it needs if it is to be a successful force in peace keeping methods.
...ment and well-being. It is clear that without the ongoing presence and work of international organisations, the international system would be in a far worse and more chaotic state, with a far greater chance for a civil war to breakout. They also are a major player in helping develop states political and economical systems.
Often when you mention the UN, nearly you are about to mention the US. A lot is shared between this country and this international institution. The commonality range from the way the way the UN was formed to the way it is governed today. Since the time the UN was established, the US has been having notable influence on the operations of the UN. A lot can be attributed to this aspect, but among those, it is important to mention that America’s budget support for the UN cannot be underscored by anybody. Statistically, the US supports 25% of the UN’s budget and this gesture clearly communicates how committed the US is to the affairs of the UN. America, though indirectly, commands the world and through the UN, it effectively accomplishes this goal. America is the superpower and that is not negotiable. America led to the formation of the UN and hence the UN leans a lot on the US. Nevertheless, times have changed and radicalism is shaping the way the future will be managed. Many people, or rather countries are compelling the magnitude of the influence America has in the running of the UN. They question the valid of the aspect of inclusion in the management and decision making process of the UN. Generally, the UN is ought to take account of all the nation’s opinions and promote unity. The poor countries have a feeling that their opinion is of no any effect in the world’s governing body, the UN, and hence are inputting all efforts possible to ensure that this phenomenon is eliminated. Normally, the UN is governed using democratic principles and voting is used to ultimately making the final decisions. However, America stands a chance to willingly give in to the demands of these countries or to state her case vehemently through facts that co...

In the year 2000 the United Nations set out a goal to stop hunger poverty and unfair living to people of the world not just the United States. This idea was called the Millennium Development Goals (MDG). Upon taking on a task such as this the UN wanted to break down goals in sections of eight to better categorize them to use every resource they had to make this plan possible. Not every catgeroy had the same plan put in place and for that exact reason these goals where not something to be done over night, hence how the name of the idea started with millennium. The UN has also been known for their work to gather its members and countries as one to work to accomplish its goals of maintaining peace and security, they wanted to protect human rights by providing humanitarian assistance, and assisting economic and social development throught the world. This gives us a better idea of what MDG project is for and how it was created.
In 2015, President Barack Obama addressed the United Nations General Assembly and talked about the significance the United Nations has had since its creation in 1945, claiming: “This institution [U.N.] was founded because men and women who came before us had the foresight to know that our nations are more secure when we uphold basic laws and basic norms, and pursue a path of cooperation over conflict. And strong nations, above all, have a responsibility to uphold this international order.” President Obama argues that the U.N. is the glue which holds the international system together and promotes mutually beneficial outcomes for the world. The fact that an international organization (IO) such as the U.N. has endured for over 70 years is some
