John Proctor had a very great life till Abigail came along. He is proof that if someone is unfaithful it can cost them everything, maybe even life. In the beginning of “The Crucible” John Proctor is angry, cold-hearted, and unfaithful. This eventually turns into faithfulness to his wife.
In the first act John Proctor is cold hearted. “Abby, I may think of you softly from time to time but I will cutoff my hand before I’ll ever touch you again. Wipe it out of mind. We never touched Abby.” (Miller 15) John Proctor is clearly cold-hearted here when he tells Abigail that he doesn’t want anything to do with her. He has no interest in Abby as he once did. “No, I take my own, my own!” (Miller 60) Proctor wants to take his own sins upon himself and his wife Elizabeth’s. “I think it is honest, I think so; I am no saint. Let Rebecca go like a saint; for me it is fraud.” (Miller 60) He admits that he was definitely not a saint, and that he was wrong for what he did.
Also in the fourth act John Proctor was very emotional, considering it was the end of his life. He becomes sad and distressed. “Because it is my name! Because I cannot have another in my life! Because I lie and sign myself to lies! Because I am not worth the dust on the feet of them that hang! How may I live without my name? I have given you my soul; leave my name!” (Miller 62) John Proctor doesn’t want to give up the last shred of dignity that he may have left therefore he begs for his name.
John Proctors motive is his family. The love he has for his family motivates him to want to confess and be a better man than he once was. He doesn’t want to be a sinner and he regrets ever having relations with Abigail.
John Proctor’s life made a very drastic change throughout this time period and his life. Not only did he lose his life to his wrong doings, he lost his wife before and his family. Proctor experiences various emotions throughout “The Crucible” and he overcomes many obstacles within
