Whether men realize it or not, women constantly deceive them. There is a persistent normality of the common man falling for, in most cases, a beautiful woman’s sly and deceptive mind games. As seen in London in the 1890’s in “A Scandal in Bohemia,” written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, there is a prime example of clever trickery between Irene Adler and Sherlock Holmes. The word clever is usually owned by Holmes, but not in this instance. It all starts with Adler deceptively blackmailing the King of Bohemia with a picture, who then hires Holmes to retrieve this picture. Ultimately, Adler cracks Holmes’ plan and outwits him, keeping the picture away from him, telling him how she did it too. This irks Sherlock Holmes in a manner he has never been …show more content…

She is the woman who will not be underestimated. She is the woman who gets what she wants. It is mentioned that Holmes cannot feel emotions. Some may think that Holmes is in love with Adler, but love is false to him. Not even the woman who is supposedly like no other woman can attract Holmes. It is clearly seen that Sherlock Holmes is intimidated by Irene Adler. This is not a romantic passage. Adler is one step ahead of Holmes the second she realizes that his disguise, is in reality a disguise. Holmes did not expect this from anyone, especially a woman. In the 1890’s women were not on the same social level as men. Obviously, Holmes thought there was no chance a woman, Irene Idler, could decipher his plan. With Watson going back and forth between mentioning Adler as this spectacular women in Holmes’ eyes, but then immediately saying that Holmes rejects love suggests some sort of hostility. Watson keeps contradicting himself because he does not want to believe that Holmes might be capable of love. It might be that Watson wants Holmes all to himself. Watson sounds a little crazy while he ironically states the relationship between Holmes and Adler. It is odd that Holmes puts Adler up top a pedestal of her own, but is somehow incapable of loving her. Now, could it be that Watson is speaking on behalf of Holmes because he is in denial. In denial of the fact that Holmes is actually in love with Irene Adler. Holmes’ thoughts on Irene Adler are only told through Watson, which sprouts the question: Why does the audience not hear directly from Holmes about his love, or lack there of love for Adler? Irene Adler beat Sherlock Holmes at his own game and this deceiving act may attract Holmes to Adler.
