The process of human development across the lifespan is multifaceted and incorporates physical, cognitive, psychosocial and psychosexual developmental milestones. This essay will discuss the life transition of adolescence, exploring self-identity, identify some of the predictable and non-predictable life events during adolescence, as well as explain the implications for nurses and midwives caring for adolescents. This essay will incorporate the ideas and research of two leading theorists, Erikson and Kohlberg in an attempt to explain the psychological reasoning behind some of the changes across this life-transition.

Theorists such as Erikson and Kohlberg developed theories to provide insight into the reasons behind the way adolescents behave and the process in which they process their information. The concept of identity is more complex than simply how individuals identify themselves. It involves the perceived perceptions of their peers as well as a combination of experiences and values. For the adolescent, self-identity is at a crucial stage of development as they try to establish their place in the world. Puberty, which is a challenge on its own, is one of the predictable events that occur during this life-transition. An unpredictable event, which can be devastating for the individual and their family, is an eating disorder. Nurses can play a vital role in nurturing adolescents through this life-transition by following the nursing competency standards and providing quality nursing care and education. In order to transition from childhood into early adulthood an individual must transform through adolescence. Although adolescence can be a confusing time, it is also responsible for shaping and developing the physical, cognitive, psychosocial and psychosexual aspects of the individual and creates the opportunity for personal growth and
