Throughout my high school career, I’ve never worked with anything that has made me think so much. Sure, you can watch the play Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead at face value, have a few laughs until it stops being funny, and then go on with your life. But you aren’t getting out of it all that Tom Stoppard intended. This play is so much more than just an accompanying work to Hamlet. It fleshes out the characters of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern in a way that makes you consider your own life! And if you really want to take anything from this play, you need to understand the messages it contains. This is a challenge to some, because of how deeply they contrast with the play at face value. But, if you can look deeper, you will a couple things about life. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead by Tom Stoppard contains the three messages of life being chaotic, taking charge of your destiny, and knowing your identity.
Initially, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead by Tom Stoppard conveys a message about life being chaotic. When I say chaotic, I don’t mean fire and brimstone raining down from the heavens. I mean that life is random. Unpredictable things happen in this world; things that will never be explained. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead highlights this fact many times throughout the play. The most famous example is the opening scene, when Rosencrantz and Guildenstern start their journey in an ambiguously described wilderness, going somewhere they can’t quite remember but go regardless. In this scene, Rosencrantz is playing a timeless gambling game, in which he bets Guildenstern the coin will land on heads upon him flipping it, catching it, and slapping it down on his other hand. Clearly, the play Rosencrantz and Guildenstern raises many questions. But among these questions, it makes a few statements. First, it says that life is chaotic, and absurd things will happen from time to time. Next, it says people should take charge of their own destinies, and not pass through life with no purpose. Lastly, this play teaches to find your identity, because without it you are nothing. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern were nobodies, those unfortunates who drifted through life until their time ran out. Learn from their mistakes, and live the lessons learned from Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead.
