“The Things They Carried” is a short story about the Vietnam war and a few of those who served. The war began in 1954 between North Vietnam and South Vietnam, the South being the United State’s ally. The United States wasn’t fully into the war until 1969, and President Richard Nixon pulled the troops by 1973 (history.com). The war ended soon after with a communist victory, leading to the country unifying as the Socialist Republic of Vietnam in 1975. The Vietnam war ended looking like a huge mistake, spending hundreds of billions and coming out with 58,200 dead Americans (history.com), and more than three million total deaths.

The first character mentioned is Lieutenant Jimmy Cross. Jimmy was deeply in love with a girl named Martha, who was in college at the time that he was fighting in the war. They wrote back and forth, the author described the letters as “not love letters, but Lieutenant Cross was hoping,” (595) meaning that although she might not know, he loved her. After the day 's march, he would take the letters out of his rucksack and imagine being with her, doing things like taking camping trips. Lieutenant Cross also carried things needed for war like a compass, maps, code books, strobe lights, binoculars, and a .45 caliber pistol. Along with his love for Martha, he figuratively carried the responsibility for the lives of his men, and Ted Lavender’s death, which he blamed himself for(598). Kiowa was a committed religious person who carried a copy of the New Testament with him all the time that was given to him by his father (596).Norman Bowker is hardly spoken of in the story, but the author mentions that he carries a diary, probably to record what happens while he’s fighting in the war, something that no other character does (596). The only other character who is said to have written was Jimmy Cross but he never spoke of war in the letters with Martha
