“The Things They Carried” is a short story about the Vietnam war and a few of those who served. The war began in 1954 between North Vietnam and South Vietnam, the South being the United State’s ally. The United States wasn’t fully into the war until 1969, and President Richard Nixon pulled the troops by 1973 (history.com). The war ended soon after with a communist victory, leading to the country unifying as the Socialist Republic of Vietnam in 1975. The Vietnam war ended looking like a huge mistake, spending hundreds of billions and coming out with 58,200 dead Americans (history.com), and more than three million total deaths.

The first character mentioned is Lieutenant Jimmy Cross. Jimmy was deeply in love with a girl named Martha, who was in college at the time that he was fighting in the war. They wrote back and forth, the author described the letters as “not love letters, but Lieutenant Cross was hoping,” (595) meaning that although she might not know, he loved her. After the day 's march, he would take the letters out of his rucksack and imagine being with her, doing things like taking camping trips. Lieutenant Cross also carried things needed for war like a compass, maps, code books, strobe lights, binoculars, and a .45 caliber pistol. Along with his love for Martha, he figuratively carried the responsibility for the lives of his men, and Ted Lavender’s death, which he blamed himself for(598). Kiowa was a committed religious person who carried a copy of the New Testament with him all the time that was given to him by his father (596).Norman Bowker is hardly spoken of in the story, but the author mentions that he carries a diary, probably to record what happens while he’s fighting in the war, something that no other character does (596). The only other character who is said to have written was Jimmy Cross but he never spoke of war in the letters with Martha
In the novel, The Things They Carried, Tim O’Brien shares several different experiences during the Vietnam War that had a great impact on the soldiers that fought along side him and himself. Although not all the stories are connected to one another, some intertwine. Attempting to show the reader who he is then and who he is now throughout the book, O’Brien flips back and forth between the past and the present: sharing his experiences during the war and his current time being a post-war father. War takes a toll on a man in more ways than one. Many seek comfort in bringing personal items with them to battle to remember where they came from and what they have to look forward to when returning home.
Most of this story revolves around experiences that Tim O’Brien has had. And he certainly has changed from the beginning of the story (speaking chronologically) where he was no more than a scared civilian, who would do anything to escape such a fate as the draft. He would eventually become the war-hardened slightly cocky veteran that he is now. But it is only through his experiences that he would become who he is today. Through all the things he has witnessed. Whether it be watching curt lemon be almost literally "blown to heaven" to having killed a man and making assumptions about who he truly was. He made not have been most affected by the war, but it was he who was described in the most detail, due to the fact that he was describing in first person

The woman that Cross is in love with is named Martha. She's barely a junior from Mount Sebastian College in New Jersey. Although he is madly in love with her, Martha doesn't return the feelings back for him. This one-sided love causes him to ponder and lose focus of what is really important, keeping himself and his troops alive and well. As he is lying in his foxhole, he looks at pictures of Martha; he can't help to feel, "More than anything, he wanted Martha to love him as he loved her " As shown, he just wants to be with her and to share a love with her. Over and over again, he would think about her; sometimes in foxholes, sometimes while marching, even at times of danger. This lack of focus on the real dilemma, their situation in the war, will be a costly one.
Tim O’Brien is drafted one month after graduating from Macalester College to fight a war he hated. Tim O’Brien believed he was above the war, and as a result pursued the alternative of escaping across the border to Canada. This understandable act is what Tim O’Brien considers an embarrassment to himself, and to others. When Tim O’Brien finds accommodation on the border to Canada, he meets Elroy Berdahl who eventually influences Tim O’Brien, to change. Elroy Berdahl acts as a mentor to Tim, a figure that remains detached in the sense that he must provide enough support and understanding without being attached to the results.
