Tim O'Brien’s short story “The Things They Carried” is based on experiences of a group of American soldiers during the Vietnam War. As the story progresses, the tragic death of the soldier Ted Lavender leads to the apparent guilt Lieutenant Jimmy Cross, the leader of the platoon. The responsibility of Lieutenant Jimmy Cross concerning the death of the soldier Ted Lavender is based on three main reasons: his lack of responsibility, maturity and logical thinking. First of all, Lieutenant Jimmy Cross’s lack of responsibility is a major cause of the tragic death of Ted Lavender. As mentioned in the story, Cross was not fully concentrated on the fact he had the lives of a group of man on his hands. Mr. Cross was focused on Martha, a junior student at Mount Sebastian College in New Jersey. His obsession for Martha did not allowed him to take full responsibility of his duty as the leader of a group of soldiers.
