Pierre and Coffin present the theme that good can overpower evil through the characters and events of the film. The main character is the villainous Gru, who changes from evil to good. Gru is portrayed as a villain through his actions in numerous scenes such as when he is walking down the path and the little boy’s ice-cream has fallen out. Gru blows up a balloon and pops it in the boy’s face leaving him shocked and scared. Besides from the actual events of the film, the directors have used techniques to make Gru seem very unlikable. The directors have altered Gru’s appearance, making him very unattractive, and even the house he lives in is undesirable. Once Gru adopts the three little girls, he becomes very protective of them. This illustrates the importance of having a family as they tech you love others and let people into your life. Bring his mother into the film is important as it shows how Gru can actually be part of a family.

I enjoyed watching this movie. It shows how people shouldn’t be judged for how they look or by a few actions and people can change. Often these people just need something that loves them unconditionally. This is a great movie for children to watch as there are important underlying themes they can pick up on. It is also a good movie for older people as they would enjoy the humour. The themes are portrayed successfully by the choice of characters and through the events.
