In 2013, Alfonso Cuarón released his science fiction film that was nominated for 10 Oscars and won 7, including best sound mixing and best sound editing. Gravity is about a woman’s struggle to return home and find her will to live. Gravity revolved around Dr. Ryan Stone, a scientist who lost her daughter and is still recovering. During her recovery process, she is sent on a mission into space and catastrophe strikes when a space station is hit with a rocket, sending debris into the orbit around Earth. The theme of Gravity is that our will to live can be found within other people and that you can’t get through life alone.

Dorothy lives on a farm in Kansas and the black and white technique is used to show how boring and bland Dorothy views Kansas to be. It also depicts her inability to look past lies. Dorothy lies to herself and believes that she doesn’t belong in her home and that she isn’t loved. Dorothy only seeing things as black and white rather than looking past color to see that she really does have a family who loves her. Another use of color in the Wizard of Oz is when Dorothy awakens in the land of Oz and can see color. This symbolizes her ability to see through the lies in the world of Oz. Throughout her adventure, Dorothy learns that not everything is what is seems. When Dorothy is picking apples, she learns that the trees are cruel. While at the witch’s castle, Dorothy learns that the big evil witch can be stopped with a bucket of water. Most importantly, Dorothy discovers that the great Wizard of Oz is nothing but a man behind a curtain who can’t grant wishes. As soon as color is brought into the film, Dorothy begins to pick up on lies that are being told to her. Dorothy eventually is able to sort out lies from reality and returns to Kansas where she now has the ability to realize that she has been lying to herself; her family actually does love her and Kansas is her home. Another representation of color in the land of Oz is how the Wicked Witch is dressed in black. This shows that the witch is trying to stop Dorothy from discovering the truth about herself so she can go back to thinking in black and white rather than looking at the whole picture.
