Edgar Allan Poe, born in January 19, 1809, Boston, Massachusetts, U.S is one of the greatest authors of all time, and many critics and readers consider him a Horror genre type writer (Edgar). Many of Poe’s stories could be considered some of the best of the horror genre, and his famous short story The Tell Tale Heart could be considered the best of in the horror genre. The Tell Tale Heart was first published in 1843, and was published by James Russell Lowell’s The Pioneer in January (Shmoop). The short story is told by a narrator who is trying to convince his/her sanity to the readers while also describing a murder that they committed.. The setting of the stories have a big part in what type of story that the story is. In the Tell Tale Heart, the main setting of the short story was set in the old man’s room, later during the nights around midnight. The main points of horror stories always happen later during the nights, such as midnight being when the monster comes out to haunt others. Poe through the narrator, violates the sanctity of a bedroom, because readers believe that a bedroom is supposed to a peaceful place where they can rest without fear. The scene when the old man realizes that someone or something in his room is a prime example of the suspense caused by Poe breaking the safety of a bedroom. The bedroom is described as a dark place with no light so neither the narrator or the old man could see anything in the room, which is why the narrator uses a lantern throughout the story. Many readers believe that his dark and gothic style came from the tragedies his faced at an early age. Every author has a type of style that defines their writing whether it be through the types of words they use to other literary items such as irony and imagery they use throughout their stories. Throughout The Tell Tale Heart Poe uses imagery and irony to help readers imagine and understand what is going on in the story. The narrator describes the eye of the old man as “One of his eyes resembled that of a vulture -- a pale blue eye with a film over it” (Poe). This gives the reader an image of what the narrator is driven crazy by in the story and what finally makes him/her kill the old man. The description of the eye of the old man by Poe gives a creepy feeling to readers, because it leaves the question of “Why is his eye pale blue?” This leaves a question that was never answered. Poe’s examples of imagery continue when he writes as the narrator creeps into the old man’s room “So I opened it -- you cannot imagine how stealthily, stealthily -- until at length a single dim ray like the thread of the spider shot out from the crevice and fell upon the vulture eye” this gives the feeling of the narrator creeping into the old man’s room like a predator preying on its pray right before it’s about to strike (Poe).Irony is the expression of one 's
