Basketball is a highly competitive sport, usually played between two different teams. Yet, the competition runs deeper than just the game played between two opposing teams. The truth is, players on the same team compete over roles all the time. This type of in-team competition is normal, but it must be kept at a healthy level. The Legacy Girls' Basketball team suffers from this type of competition everyday. In the past, the girls have had very successful seasons––just last year, in fact, they went 13-12. This year, however, with a record of 6-15, the girls are having a losing season. An unfortunate streak like that can be tough on any team––even those with the closest of bonds.
The losing season can be accounted for by two main concerns: One, there is an extreme lack of defensive effort, and two, negative attitudes have flared up because of frustrations between the players. These attitudes are causing more than just team problems, though; they are causing issues in the players' friendships off the basketball court. No sports team likes to lose, but because poor playing is hurting the team both on and off the court, affirmative action must be taken. Increased work on defense and shutting down the negative attitudes towards fellow teammates will not only help increase communication and trust, but it will also increase the chances of winning games throughout the rest of the season.
The first step towards getting the team involved is improving their defensive play. Coach Dan Nelson is a great offensive mentor, but when it comes to defense, the best person to go to is Mr. Dwight Nelson. If people decide to continue to ignore the negative team chemistry, things will just continue to get worse, not better. Even though the scores have gotten closer over the past few weeks, the lack of communication and defense makes it impossible for the team to close out halves and games. When losses come with bitter, blame-filled comments, it makes the season even less enjoyable. By using this three-step solution, two problems can be solved. Communication will increase and losses will diminish.
The Varsity team lost to the JV team because they did not work together as team. Though the Varsity team consisted of high performing individuals for speed, strength, and endurance but together they lacked the cohesiveness to perform as a single unit. Also among them there were a lot of internal conflicts cropping up like blaming each other, lack of trust and confidence in the ability of others etc., which were not identified, or resolved at appropriate time. Each one did not believe he was working as a part of the team; rather they tried to maximize their individual capabilities alone. In addition the Varsity team lacked a strong leader, mostly people were disruptors.
17 year-old Rashim Lancit was the standard senior at LaSalle High School. His best friends were Andrew and Colin. They played together for their high school basketball team. However, Rashim loved the game of basketball more than his friends and dreamed to go to the NBA. He thought there was no way that he would make it there. However, that all changed one Friday night at the LaSalle basketball game.
Joes High School’s total enrollment consisted of sixteen girls, and twenty boys. Ten of the boys that had enrolled there played basketball. All of the boys were over six feet tall. Lane Sullivan, the new coach of the basketball team, had never even touched a basketball before he started coaching. Sullivan had never coached anything at all before he started coaching the Joes basketball team. In order to gain knowledge about the sport, he got a book about it. He started coaching in 1927, but before the 1928 basketball season, Joes High School didn’t even have a gym. Instead, they’d practice outside on a dirt court, and two times a week they’d take a bus to the nearest gym, which was ten miles away. In order to play home games, the boys had to play in the local dance hall. The “court” was nowhere near regulation size, and the ceiling was so short that the boys couldn’t shoot an arched shot. The people who attended these basketball games had no place to sit and watch the game, the all stood around the edges of the court and on the small stage. Joes High School finally got their own gym around Christmas time because the people of Joes donated their time and material in order to make it happen.
Coaches are always looking for a better understanding of what makes up a winning team. This knowledge would help them in recruiting athletes that could improve the team’s statistics in the areas we observed. We took the entire statistical breakdown from the 1999-2000 season and were hoping to find any key statistical areas that could be directly related to winning percentage.

The OU men’s basketball team is a monochronic, masculine, collectivistic, and individualistic co-culture. They come together as a team, but each player has their own identity attached to this co-culture in their own way. One of the teammates, Bob, was kind enough to provide answers to a few questions that will bring a little more understanding to how the players view themselves within their co-culture. All of the members of this co-culture are college students at the University of Oklahoma and range from freshmen to seniors. It is a masculine co-culture because it is a men’s team.
The situation that I am choosing is Coach K wants to increase his basketball players’ free throw percentages. The first thing I would do is talk to the whole team and let them know what my standards are. Let’s say currently the team is shooting free throws at 65%, I would lay down the foundation of what my expectations are, and would let them know that I would like for the team to increase its free throw percentage to at least 80%. The positive reinforcer that I would use is more play time minutes during an actual game. Until then, women and girls had been allowed to play only a six-player game in which offensive and defensive players were rooted to one half of the court (Basketball). “The odds of a high school basketball player making it to the “next level” to play college basketball (DI, II, or III) is slim. In fact, only 3.4% of high school players go on to play college basketball. Taking it even further, only 1.2% of college basketball players go on to get drafted in the NBA” (Winters, 2016). There are two types of players in the game. There are the kids who play basketball because they are athletic, and all they are seeking to gain is the recognition and awards. They want to be known. Those players are self-centered, they do not play for the team, and generally don’t play because they love the game. These are the types of players who don’t usually go on to play at the next level. On the other hand, there are the players that absolutely dedicate their life to the game of basketball just because they love the game. That is what coaches are looking for in a player, and that is the kind of player I am striving to be.
When an NBA team wins back to back championships it is no coincidence that they are the best team in the league. But what makes up a winning basketball team? Most people would assume that if the team has the best player, or the best coach, or the biggest team, then the team has the best team. In reality, it takes more than that. A proper coaching philosophy contains principles which improve character development, teach step by step tactical and technical skills, form proper progressive physical training regimens, and carefully utilize team management to handle and control problems with administrative issues. A coach with a sound philosophy should mold a team with strong cohesion, and he should treat players not only as teammates, but as family and friends who are encouraged to develop communication and lifelong learning of skills through positive support and role modeling from the coach (Mergelsberg, 14-15).
