Overall, the United States system of government is effective in protecting the rights and liberties of its citizens. The systems of checks and balances as well as concurrent powers exist to protect Americans’ liberties and represent their interests. The use of public opinion and the media also play a large role in the functioning of the system of governance and at the same time act to safeguard the liberties and rights of the American people.
The United States government consists of three branches, in which each branch monitors the actions and decisions of the other two branches (Schmidt, 2013). The three branches of government consist of the executive branch, the legislative branch, and the judicial branch. In terms of the federal government, the executive branch’s main responsibility is to oversee the laws being made by Congress and to enforce them. The executive branch consists of the president, the vice president, and the Cabinet. The legislative branch is in charge of creating and implementing legislation and exhibiting the power to declare war, as decided by Congress. The House of Representatives and the Senate make up Congress, which belongs to the legislative branch of government (whitehouse.gov). The judicial branch is responsible for interpreting the laws made by Congress and ensuring that they are constitutional (court.laws.com). The judicial branch is comprised of the Supreme Court, the highest court in the United States judiciary (judiciary.senate.gov).
