Like many theorems, ideas and beliefs, Dialectical Materialism was not the epiphany of a single mind. Karl Marx was merely the genius who realized that the two concepts could be conjoined to explain the cycle of past, present and remarkably even future economic systems. Karl Marx was a very perceptive economist who concentrated on capitalism and its opportunity costs. The “Father of Socialism” combined Hegel’s, Smith’s and Malthus’ previous hypothesis to form a new constant that’s been established true, Dialectical Materialism.
To fully comprehend the term Dialectic Materialism, one must analyze the phrase independently. Dialectics were the Greek followers of a philosopher by the name of Hegel. He established that there would always be a fluctuation between the forces of the universe. More directly, this applies to the cycle of any economy and states that it would continuously go through periods of recession and depression. Moreover, after a period of ying and yang, next would follow a new stage, a synthesis of the thesis and antithesis. Marx had a way to visually represent this with his world renowned Historical Dialectic which compares societal evolution with economic progression and development over time.

Marx introduces his historical materialism philosophy in the German Ideology: Part 1 of this book, where he proposes communism. Although I agree with a few points Marx gives, I cannot accept his overall conclusion that communism is the only way to become truly free. Despite the world being full of diverse people with varying accomplishments and skill sets, people oftentimes assume the qualities and traits of an individual based purely on the stereotypes set forth by society. In the Communist Manifesto we see early versions of essential Marxist concepts that Marx would elaborate with more scientific rigor in mature writings such as Das Kapital. Perhaps most important of these concepts is the theory of historical materialism, which states that historical change is driven by collective actors attempting to realize their economic aims, resulting in class struggles in which one economic and political order is replaced by another. One of the central tenets of this theory is that social relationships and political alliances form around relations of production. Relations of production depend on a given society’s mode of production, or the specific economic organization of ownership and division of labor. A person’s actions, attitudes, and outlook on society and his politics, loyalties, and sense of collective belonging all derive from his location in the relations of production. Television has affected every aspect of life in society, radically changing the way individuals live and interact with the world. However, change is not always for the better, especially the influence of television on political campaigns towards presidency. Since the 1960s, presidential elections in the United States were greatly impacted by television, yet the impact has not been positive. Television allowed the public to have more access to information and gained reassurance to which candidate they chose to vote for. However, the media failed to recognize the importance of elections. Candidates became image based rather than issue based using a “celebrity system” to concern the public with subjects regarding debates (Hart and Trice). Due to “hyperfamiliarity” television turned numerous people away from being interested in debates between candidates (Hart and Trice). Although television had the ability to reach a greater number of people than it did before the Nixon/Kennedy debate, it shortened the attention span of the public, which made the overall process of elections unfair, due to the emphasis on image rather than issue.
The German thinker, Karl Marx (1818-1883), wanted to understand and explain the changes that occurred in society at the time of the Industrial Revolution in Europe. (ibid) In 1843 Marx met Engels in Paris. It marked the beginning of a lifelong of friendship and professional collaboration. In 1848 Marx and Engels published “The Communist Manifesto”. The Manifesto outlined the struggles between classes. From then onwards it has become apparent that Marx was not an economist. His theories are a combination of economics, history, sociology and politics. Marx moved to London in 1849 where he spent the rest of his life.

Marx defined historical materialism in the preface of A Contribution to the Critique of Political Economy that, “it is not the consciousness of men that determines their existence, on the contrary, their social existence that determines their consciousness.” In contrast to idealism, which prioritized the value of human ideas, historical materialism insisted that the existence of human kinds pushed the productions; and mode of production shaped human consciousness in return. The contradictory between Idealism and historical materialism lie between whether it was evolvement of consciousness steering for societal changes or the other way around. While choosing one of them as individual political philosophy, it was very similar of answering question, “which came first, chicken or egg?” Personally, I favor for historical materialism for “consciousness is determined by your beings” seems rational as well as logical.
