As a senior I am obviously aware that my journey through school is coming to an end. At this point in my life, I have a slight idea about what I want to do in the future; however, I still don’t know if that’s where I want to go and I won’t ever know until I learn more about it. Some people may see my lack of permanent direction as an indication of someone who is lost. This is noticeable in verse 1 line 7, “One day it may struggle out of its tender pearl of blind skin/with a wing or with vision/leaving behind the transparent.” In this line, Hogan has used the growing of the creature as a metaphor to illustrate the development and maturing of a person. This line effectively conveys the message that at some point in our lives, we will eventually leave our cocoon created by our parents and teachers, leaving us to survive on our own creation. This line reflects me because I have come to the end of my school journey and therefore will soon be leaving my cocoon. In addition, the poet has used the verb struggle to indicate the difficulty of leaving a place that you’ve been in for so long and adjusting to the new change. Likewise, this mirrors my current attitude towards life after school, because I know that leaving both home and school will be challenging; however, I know that I will grasp many new skills and experiences, which in the long run will be very worthwhile. Furthermore, the poem continues on to say, “I cover it again, keep labouring/hands in earth, myself a singular body.” This line disseminates to readers how the path that people choose to go down may at first not be what was expected; however if you continue to keep searching, you will eventually find the one that fits you best. This line highlights my perspective on university and how although I hope to study something that I currently think I would enjoy, down the line I might discover that it’s not for me and continue to do something that right now I don’t see myself doing. This has indicated how Hogan’s poem has effectively reflected my current attitudes and perspectives on life after
