Character Background According to the Norton Anthology, The Summoner “is an employee of the ecclesiastical court, whose duty is to bring to court persons whom the archdeacon—the justice of the court—suspects of offenses against canon law. By this time, however, summoners had generally transformed themselves into corrupt detectives who spied out offenders and blackmailed them by threats of summonses” (Greenblatt, 258). Physical Appearance The Summoner has narrow eyes with scabby eyebrows, a partially hairless beard, and a red face covered in boils that no medicine can cleanse or relieve. His skin conditions are “probably diseases of venereal origin” (Greenblatt, 258) and his appearance frightens children. One can assume he also smells bad,
