Introduction: The organization I will be focusing my frame paper on is the Student Association at the University at Albany, State University of New York. The Student Association is a non-profit organization at the institution, established in 1923. Its central location is in the campus center crucial to its success of serving the students. Student Association continuously goes through organizational changes that entail new personnel on a yearly basis in all three branches including the legislative, judicial, and executive while it still manages to find stability and continue operating to serve the students. The Student Association brings in a steady flow of students to help operate from the executive board to interns each semester as the result of its embedded traditions, predictable timing of job postings, open communication, and opportunity for political experience. This paper will examine the Student Association through the four frames: Structural, Human Resource, Political, and Symbolic. This will be a unique analysis in that it will include not only outside viewpoints but also personal experience from working in the organization for two and half years, interviews from an administrative assistant, director of operations, and outside resources like their website and student group leaders. Structural Analysis: The structural frame is what keeps the Student Association open for business on a yearly basis. It not only incorporates the way in which labor is divided among workers but also how to deal with issues when they arise. It is important to remember this frame because when “structure is overlooked, an organization often misdirects energy and resources” (Bolman and Deal 68). The symbolic frame proved to be the strongest and produce the greatest amount of stability for the organization. If the symbolic frame did not exist many students on campus would not know the group existed. In the future, Student Association should look for more opportunities to become more transparent and improve structural issues student leaders see as setbacks.
