The Struggle Against Greed The Pearl written by John Steinbeck is a parable centered around greed. The Pearl mostly takes place in a small fishing village on the Gulf of Mexico in Mexico. The main characters consist of a young family. Kino, the father, was a native fisherman, who was basically a happy man even through his poverty. Juana, Kino’s wife and the mother, was a very silent and obedient woman. Then there was Coyotito, the baby, he is the family first born and was treasured as much as a gold doubloon. Coyotito gets stung by a scorpion, and while trying to find a way to pay the doctor for treatment, Kino discovers a pearl that his village calls ‘The Pearl of The World’. This book revolves around one major theme, and that would be humanities struggle with greed. One example of humanities struggle with greed was the doctors refusal to treat Kino’s son unless Kino had some way to pay him.
