The Stromboli Volcano is located at Aeolian Islands, Italy reference to picture 1 page 6. Stromboli is one of the 3 active volcanoes in Italy. Its is one of the eight islands of Aeolian Islands. The name Stromboli is from the greek name Strongule which is because of the round swelling form. The coordinates are 38.79 N, 15.21 E along with the summit elevation 926 m located near the Tyrrhenian Sea. Stromboli is an island north of the Sicily and is one of the most active volcano, it is the 3rd most explosive volcano in the world a reference picture would be to picture 2 on page 6. Stromboli is home to roughly about 400 to 850 people. Stromboli is apart of the Calabrian volcanic arc, which is involved with the subduction zone that is located …show more content…
It has a small eruption every 20 minutes. It is well known that Stromboli is consistently active, and only has very few major eruptions of the glowing lava that is shot above the craters nearly 100 to 200 m. Stromboli is a stratovolcano, and composite. Stratovolcano is a know for the size and cone shape, they are made of a hardened lava layer, volcanic ash and tephra. They are steep and the lava tends to shoot our very viscous and the lava cools quickly. The large bubbles of gas resulting from solute solution cause the stromboli explosions when they reach the top of the conduit and burst explosively to the surface. Solute solution means that gas dissolved in the magma as a result of the falling pressure as the magma rises towards the surface. This gas forms bubbles with gradually grow in size as they merge with other bubbles. Then they rise to the top and bubble then burst with the pressure or they flow out of the volcano. The explosions are caused when bubbles of gas burst explosively at the top of the conduit. These gases together with the continuous lower level degassing result in estimated produce of 6-12 thousand tons of glasses a day. The Stromboli Volcano has many vents that are inside the summit crater which is referenced in picture 5 on page 6. There are three craters called the crater terrace, this is …show more content…
People are allowed to watch its small eruptions. The allow people to go to the older crater and stand on the rim of only 150-250 m which is almost directly above the active craters which is apparently a perfect view of the terrace. The visitor understand that there is a very small chance that they could be involved in an eruption that could kill them, but it happens very few. There have been visitors who have had no problems that climb but only with a local guide and there has been few who have died in the past 30 years only two tourist lately have been killed due to the eruptions. Yet many people still risk their lives to see this magnificent volcano and its natural beauty. Due to past terrible eruptions this island was evacuated and the population went down tremendously, a person who wrote a book actually saved this island in a way by attracting visitors. On this island there is an abundance of lush vegetation, and architecture, along with beautiful beaches. The stromboli has not been hard on the wildlife. This island has become an amazing tourist attraction reference is pictures 8-9 page 6. There is two stylist who own a villa here called Dolce and Gabbana who stay on holidays there. There are fishing and many tourist houses. The people of stromboli live off of the tourist revenue mainly, they have boat trips and the famous volcano excursions. Ficogrande has a beach of black volcanic sand. There are views towards
Volcanoes. The naturally forming landforms that can look remarkably beautiful. Gentle slopes, or high rising heights with snow caps and greenery that seems to attract many tourists and sightseers around the world. These magnificent landforms can also cause major destruction and can produce forces that can explode, burn, and create a great deal of damage. Two of these extravagant wonders of the world is the Mount Saint Helens composite volcano in Washington, US, and the Mauna Loa shield volcano in Hawaii, US. These landforms have a eruption history of many colors. One has a great power in eruption, but another has a eruption that is quiet and gentle. In comparing these two volcanoes there are many likes, and dislikes, to consider. So the following
The new studies have showed that the last eruption the volcano has had was around 60,000 years ago and by studying the ejected microscopic rock indicates that the volcano has entered into a new phase of volcanic movement.
Stratovolcanoes are the most picturesque volcanoes in the world. Despite being the most beautiful they are also the most deadly type of volcano. Stratovolcanoes are characterized by gentle lower slopes with very steep slopes near the summit. Some of the most well known mountains in the world are stratovolcanoes. Mount Fuji, Mount St. Helens, and Mount Vesuvius are all very well known stratovolcanoes. Stratovolcanoes are typically built up over hundreds of thousands of years by many eruptions. Stratovolcanoes get their name from the way that they are formed. The alternating lava flows, pyroclastic flows, and lahars form multiple strata over many years and eruptions. These volcanoes can be composed from a huge spectrum of different rock types ranging from basalt to rhyolite in a single volcano, but the most common type of rock found in the...
The eruption on Mount Saint Helens has a specific cause and comes with many effects. A multifold of people would say that the “mountain looked like the site of an atomic blast” (Bredeson 30). That is a very accurate depiction as it took great power to inflict as much damage as it did. The reason for this impressive amount of force is that when magma is built up with pressure and an earthquake hits, the pressure gets magnified and the volcano explodes (Lewis). This is exactly what happened inside Mount Saint Helens. Furthermore, it has been revealed that “The earthquake that triggered the explosion was a 5.2 on the Richter scale” (Gunn 559). The earthquake to the magma can be compared as a match to gasoline. Even though the earthquake was not huge, the scale of the eruption was much greater than that of the earthquake (Gunn 560). The earthquake was only the trigger that allowed for more devastating things to occur. Thirteen hundred feet of the volcano were lost in the explosion followed by landslides, mudslides, and lava flows...
Mount St. Helens is a volcano that is located in the state of Washington. This paper will provide an overview on the volcanic eruption of Mount St. Helens that happened in May of 1980. This paper will also cover how this eruption affected the Earth, the damages and death tolls of this eruption, the economic impact, and any permanent consequences.
Mount St. Helens is an active stratovalcano in Skamania County, Washington, in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States. It is located 96 miles south of Seattle and 53 miles northeast of Portland, Oregon. The mountain is part of the Cascade Range. It is most famous for a catastrophic eruption on May 18, 1980. That eruption was the most deadly and economically destructive volcanic eruption in the history of the United States. 57 people were killed, and 200 homes, 47 bridges, 15 miles (24 km) of railways and 185 miles (300 km) of highway were destroyed. The eruption blew the top of the mountain off, reducing its summit from 9,677 feet to 8,364 feet in elevation and replacing it with a mile-wide horeshoeshaped crater.
It has a strombolian eruption style but hasn’t erupted in this century. Another massive volcano in Mexico called Iztaccihuatl is located right next to Popocatepetl. Iztaccihuatl is the third highest mountain in Mexico and is a stratovolcano. It’s nickname woman in the white comes from it looking like a sleeping woman when looking from the valley in Mexico. The last earthquake nearby Iztaccihuatl was on July twenty-seventh two thousand and fifteen. The last time this volcano erupted is unknown but they predict it was less than eleven thousand years ago. Paricutin is a volcano that grew right on top of a cornfield and was witnessed by the farmer. This volcano has a strombolian eruption style which means it has many different explosions that shoot a few meters into the air. This volcano is located in west central Mexico and is currently dormant. It consist of cinder cones that have been active but are not currently. The Tacana volcano is on the Mexico Guatemala border. It’s a stratovolcano that stand four thousand and sixty meters tall. Tacana is currently dormant but last erupted in nineteen eighty-six. When it erupted it spit out some ash which killed some plants but otherwise cause no
Mount Vesuvius is located in the Bay of Naples in Southern Italy. Its Latitude and Longitude is 40.8224° N, 14.4289° E. It is a stratovolcano and has a height of 1277 meters (1490 feet) and base of 48 kilometers (30 miles). Mount Vesuvius has erupted over 30 times and has a repose time that can last for months or even years between eruptions. Its eruptions are explosive and is dominated by pyroclastic flows. The eruption materials are usually an ash cloud with lightening that spews out dense ash falls. The lava can shoot up to 4km into the air. The most famous eruptions of Mt. Vesuvius were in 79 A.D. which destroyed the cities of Herculaneum and Pompeii. The cities were covered in 20 feet of volcanic debris. The estimated death toll was over 1000 people. The
Stories about volcanoes are captivating. Myths come in different versions, but all of them are capable of capturing yours, and everybody’s imagination.
Volcanoes are one of natures most interesting and dangerous phenomenons. The way volcanoes operate can be understood, on a basic level, by just some simple physics and chemistry, this paper will investigate and explain some of the basic physics that govern the behavior of volcanoes.

Volcanoes can be one of the most destructive forces on Earth. It is estimated that some
Mount Tambora, located on the Island of Sumbawa, Indonesia is classified as a Stratovolcano. Also known as a composite volcano, Tambora is a tall conical volcano (cone like structure) where layers of the walls are built by hardened lava and volcanic ash. The term composite is used to describe the volcano due to the composite layered structure built from sequential outpourings of eruptive materials1. Among the most common types of volcanoes, Tambora also shares its destructive prowess with best-known volcanoes such as Krakota (1883) and Vesuvius (79 A.D). The Island of Sumbawa is located in the middle of the Lesser Sunda Islands chain (a group of islands in the southern Maritime Southeast Asia) and is in the province of West Nusa Tenggara3. A map of Mount Tambora is shown in Figure 1 to provide a better perspective of its location. Interestingly enough, Tambora forms its own peninsula on Sumbawa, known as the Sanggar Peninsula. In April of 1815, after years of dormancy, Mount Tambora erupted with great intensity, approximately 7 on the volcanic explosivity index, which is shown in Figure 2. It has been estimated that the eject volume of Tambora was 160 cubic kilometres, which represents the largest volcanic eruption in recorded history. The death toll has been projected to be at least 71,000 people, of who over 15% were killed directly from the eruption1. The remaining 75% have been thought to succumb to starvation and disease, as the eruptive fallout decimated the agricultural industry in the region. Following the eruption, a volcanic winter ensued. As sun become less abundant due to clouds of ash, crops and livestock perished. Please note that all definitions appearing in the footnotes are either taken from already referenced so...
Mount Vesuvius is a volcano located in southern Italy, near the bay of Naples and the city of Naples. It is the only active volcano on the European mainland. Vesuvius rises to a height of 1277 m (4190 ft). Vesuvio (Vesuvius) is probably the most famous volcano on earth, and is one of the most dangerous.
