Communicating in today’s society has become a lot easier with social networking sites allowing us to communicate with people through technological devices. Facebook, being one of many social networking sites, allows people to connect with friends and family in our surroundings and across the seas. Originally, Facebook was started in a Harvard dorm room in 2003 by one of its students, Mark Zuckerburg. It began as a social network for Harvard students and then quickly expanded to universities across America. Facebook, as we know it today, started in the year 2004. On September 26, 2006, Facebook became available to everyone age 13 and older with a valid email address. Most participants log on at least once a day. Personally, I long on at least once a day and spend about 5 to 10 minutes checking my messages, posting a comment, and replying to invitations and comments. When I first created a Facebook page, I spent a lot of time chatting with friends and family, as well as playing games that most “facebookers” play, such as Bejeweled, Farmville and Family Feud. As of this morning, 500 million people all around the world are actively using Facebook to stay connected with their friends and the people around them (Zuckerberg, 2010). The social network site has quickly developed into one of the most trafficked networking websites, which runs thousands of databases. By building a network that has spread across various countries, Facebook has successfully created a form of technology that allows people to connect with friends across the seas with different cultures.

There are numerous benefits that social network provided for users but these benefits come at a price. Adults tend to be concerned about what the social network like Facebook, twitter, and Myspace do with their data and are worried that they will either be data mined or that they will suffer from identity theft. Facebook is a new phenomenon of our generation with hundreds of millions of users and it is definitely not difficult to add friends, family, and coworkers. However, Facebook is also an easy way to replace the outside world with spending all day surfing other people’s profile, chatting and playing games.
Social networking is a concept that has been around for a long time than the Internet. People have always been able to work together in a team. Social networking has come to users using the internet to communicate in various different ways. This focuses on creating a ground for social networking and collaboration. Social networking is about everyone in the society where it has become self-sustaining and created further growth leading to human social interaction. A social networking site has allowed users to post their profiles and create personal details for exchanging information with other users (Weaver and Morrison, 2008) [1]. In early stages, social networks have become the most frequently used tools. “Facebook is currently the largest online social network. Its business model is based on the analysis of user data to display customized advertisements. However, the data collection induces possible privacy concerns which oppose perceived benefits. Information privacy concerns are important aspects for the intention not to use Facebook but it is outweighed by perceived usefulness”. (Becker and Pousttchi 2012, pg.187) [2].
According to the definition of( Boyd & Elison:2007) social networks are web-based sites services that allows individuals to construct a semi- public profile within a bounded system and articulates a list of other users with whom they share a connection view and traverse their list of connections and those made by others within the system.Social network websites like MySpace and Facebook have exploded in popularity in recent years, with users numbering in the hundreds of millions (Kornblum, 2006: Newland: 2007). According to comScore (2008), visitors to social network websites have grown 34% in the past year to 530 million visits, which represent two out of every three internet users. Millions of people have joined social networking sites, adding profiles that reveal personal information. The reputations of
Social networking websites, such as MySpace, Facebook and Twitter, have blown up immensely in just a short span of about 5 years; most people nowadays have found that these and other social networking sites have become a “necessity” in their lives and must constantly be checking in on them. Social networking sites such as the ones mentioned above allow anyone to make new friends, reconnect with old ones, and blog just about anything under the sun. For that and many other reasons it is not unusual nowadays to hear people talk about their status updates, picture uploads and the friends they have made on social networking sites on a regular basis. Social networking sites seem like easy ways to make new friends or to express one’s feelings. Since
Social networks allow users to create a customized identity and keep in touch with an audience, whether that is family and friends, classmates, colleagues or fanatics. Most social networks make it possible for individuals to upload their entire life to a public profile. You’re not only sharing personal information with your friends but also the friends of your friends. Personal information spreads rapidly on a Social Networking Site than through a real-life network and sometimes provides more information than we would have thought. A social networking site is defined as a network of individuals related to each other based on a common interest or a real-life connection. The popularity of these sites introduces the use of a new and easy form of communication. People spend countless hours interacting with their ‘friends’ on these sites with the help of a ‘comment’ and a ‘like’ button.
The 21st century has brought a lot of modern ideas, innovations, and technology. One of these is social media. The invention of Facebook has completely changed the way we communicate with one another. Instant messaging, photo sharing, and joining online groups have created a way for families and friends to connect. Some argue that Facebook is the greatest invention however, while it is seemingly harmless, Facebook has created an invasion of privacy. The accessibility of Facebook and its widespread use has created privacy problems for users, teens, and interviewees by allowing easy control to viewers.

In Betty White’s opening monologue to Saturday Night Live, she said, “I didn’t know what Facebook was, and now that I do know what it is, I have to say, it sounds like a huge waste of time. I would never say the people on it are losers, but that’s only because I’m polite.” Originally intended for the use of students at Harvard University in 2004, Facebook grew exponentially to be an online phenomenon in the years following. In 2006, it became accessible to anyone and everyone with internet connection. Aside from the advantages that give the site its popularity, creating a profile comes with a number of significant disadvantages inherit to online social networks. What do more than 500 million active users use their Facebook for? Communicating with long distance friends and spreading awareness of causes are common responses. Unfortunately, Facebook has it flaws, from limiting the privacy of relationships to creating a form of almost unmanageable bullying, making one reconsider their involvement and think, “do I really want my Facebook account?”
In this day and age, many individuals simply cannot go without some sort of socialization. Specifically speaking, most participate in online social networking sites. The most popular and used one is commonly known as Facebook. Facebook was created in 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg. By 2007, Facebook had over 21 million users, adding up to 1.6 billion page views every single day. The typical user spends over twenty minutes per day on Facebook and two thirds of the users log in every day at least once. It is not questionable as to why many people have a Facebook account. Facebook is generally efficient, easy for socialization, and not difficult to manage. Most organizations are affiliated with Facebook, as “almost 22,000 organizations had Facebook directories,” as of November 2006. A year after that in 2007, Facebook was named the seventh most popular website (Ellison 1). However, with anything well known, many oppose to using Facebook and hold criticism against the popular network. There are many flaws in the website and the relationships it starts online. Facebook is risking dangerous activities, ignoring privacy laws, and demeaning healthy socialization.
The popular site, Facebook.com, has amassed more than one billion registrants since it started in February 2004. It is another social networking site, just like MySpace.com and Xanga.com, which is common to High School and College students. But this is no ordinary site; people’s lives literally revolve around Facebook. I have a Facebook account and log in at least once a day. I personally believe that Facebook is a fun and interactive site. However, some students may not feel that same way because they have encountered some negative aspects, aside from Facebook’s legal problems.
... led to a diversification of the people who create and maintain them. This can be anyone. Putting personal information into the hands of a stranger is risky outside of the Internet, but even more so online. The ease and speed of the mobility of information means no information is safe on Facebook. Anyone who can see it can copy, save, or redistribute the information at will. A broad and deep aggregate source of information makes search and retrieval of anything posted on Facebook quick and easy. If somebody wants information about you they know how and where to look. Finally, this information can be passed along and analyzed in order to draw conclusions about you and your lifestyle. These can be stereotypical and false. Facebook and other social media sites, and more broadly information technology in general has greatly impacted our lives and our right to privacy.
Technology is changing how we think and act at younger ages. The term “technology” doesn’t only mean manufacturing processes and equipment necessary for production, it also defines a social space and could be a social problem which makes a real impact on social reality. Different types of social software affect a variety of aspects and have both positive and negative impacts. It's important to be aware of how a digitally-driven life is changing our education, sense of self, relationships, social interaction, consumerism, and ways of doing business around the world.
However, there are also some negative effects of social networking sites. Spending too much time on social networking sites affects people’s work and study, and people will become more and more isolated from their friends in real life. Moreover, it is difficult to protect users’ privacy on social networking sites, so it may result in the risk of revealing personal details. All in all, the popularity of social networking sites depends on the copycat effect among people, convenience in themselves, and their good functions. When social networking sites are becoming an important part of people’s lives, people should learn to make the most of these sites instead of wasting time.
The use of social networking has both its advantages and disadvantages. One advantage is “an Internet social network can help you connect with other people who share your interest, and find resources to ga...
Facebook is beneficial to one's social life because they can continuously stay in contact with their friends and relatives, while others say that it can cause increased antisocial tendencies because people are not directly communicating with each other.
