Buried Secrets
In these two stories, hidden feelings play a big role in both characters lives. Langston Hughes, the main character of “Salvation”, brings to light the importance of hidden secrets. In a similar way, Kate Chopin, achieves her goal of explaining how hidden feelings can change the view from a family 's’ point of view. Its interesting to see how a family can think well about each other but really be hiding secrets, or feelings.
In a family structure it 's normal for one to grieve when a member dies but, in “ The Story of an Hour,” by Kate Chopin, it 's a different story. Although it feels good to do the right thing we all know that we want to do what feels good in the moment, and not what will help us for the future. Despite having this knowledge, I still didn 't listen to my mom when she told me to do my project on time. I waited and waited for the last days to come to do my project and next thing I knew it was the morning of the deadline. The very next day my mom asked me how I did on my project, but all I could do is cry because I hadn 't completed it. I didn 't sleep due the endless thoughts of what I could 've done. My mom thought I was crying because I hadn’t slept and was tired. She gave me a hug and said, “I know you 're tired, but I just want to say I 'm very proud of you”. However, that only made me cry harder knowing that I had to keep this secret from my mom, and mask my true feelings. So that day I promised myself that I wouldn 't do it again because I hated the feeling of hidden emotions.
Finally, keeping hidden secrets and feelings from family causes guilt, trouble, and shame. In “Salvation” Langston was hurting because of the truth that he was hiding from his aunt. Mrs. Mallard’s secret feelings died with her, which prevented trouble within her family. These secrets aren 't meant for keeping because it does us no good, they are meant for moving
After learning and reading about Kate Chopin and Nathaniel Hawthorne, one can recognize how their life experiences and era shape the message of their literary works. These two writers, born almost fifty years apart, had a completely different family setting, thus their writings differ and so does their morals. In literature, personal experiences in the writers’ lives have a great significance in their writing style, theme, and symbolism.
The background of both authors, which was from the South, we can conclude how they could described the situations that they faced such as political and social presumptions problems especially for women at that time. If any other characters in Kate Chopin’s “The Story of an Hour” were to read Mrs. Mallard’s thoughts, they would surely be horrified. What sort of sane, caring woman would feel joy and relief at the death of her husband? She must be a terrible person, despite her reasoning for those feelings. How could Mr. Mallard have chosen such a woman for his bride? She’s a gem, truly; note the sarcasm. Though, one does have to consider what else there is to Mrs. Mallard. She is a human and there is much more to her than her seemingly ill feelings toward her late husband, such as her desire for freedom, her genuine care for Mr. Mallard, and her capacity to exhibit strong emotions.

In "The Story of an Hour" Kate Chopin tells the story of a woman, Mrs. Mallard whose husband is thought to be dead. Throughout the story Chopin describes the emotions Mrs. Mallard felt about the news of her husband's death. However, the strong emotions she felt were not despair or sadness, they were something else. In a way she was relieved more than she was upset, and almost rejoiced in the thought of her husband no longer living. In using different literary elements throughout the story, Chopin conveys this to us on more than one occasion.
Kate Chopin provides her reader with an enormous amount of information in just a few short pages through her short story, “The Story of an Hour.” The protagonist, Louise Mallard, realizes the many faults in romantic relationships and marriages in her epiphany. “Great care [is] taken to break to her as gently as possible the news of her husband’s death” (Chopin 168). Little do Josephine and Richards know, the news will have a profoundly positive effect on Louise, rather than a negative one. “When she abandoned herself,” Mrs. Mallard opened her mind to a new way of life.
“The Story of the Hour” by Kate Chopin portrays an opposing perspective of marriage by presenting the reader with a woman who is somewhat untroubled by her husbands death. The main character, Mrs. Louise Mallard encounters the sense of freedom rather than sorrow after she got knowledge of her husbands death. After she learns that her husband, Brently, is still alive, it caused her to have a heart attack and die. Even though “The Story of the Hour” was published in the eighteen hundreds, the views of marriage in the story could coincide with this era as well.
Both stories were written by women, Charlotte Perkins Gilman and Kate Chopin. But is this fact important to understand the aim of every story? Would they have had the same effect if the had been written by men? I will explore these matters.
Kate Chopin was a woman and a writer far ahead of her time. She was a realistic fiction writer and one of the leaders and inspirational people in feminism. Her life was tragic and full of irregular events. In fact, this unusual life had an enormous effect on her writings and career. She depicted the lifestyle of her time in her works. In most of her stories, people would find an expansion of her life’s events. In her two stories “The Storm” and “The Story of One Hour” and some of her other works she denoted a lot of her life’s events. Kate Chopin is one of those writers who were influenced by their life and surrounded environment in their fiction writing, and this was very clear in most of her works.
Written by Kate Chopin, the short story “The Story of an Hour” follows Louise Mallard, a woman from the nineteenth century who has just received the news that her husband, Brently Mallard, has passed away in a horrific train accident. Immediately Mrs. Mallard is overcome with grief and sorrow, but her mood quickly shifts when she realizes the independence and free-will she will now have. At the climax of her elation for the future, her husband walks through the door. Mrs. Mallard, shocked and speechless, dies of a heart attack. In the short story, "The Story of an Hour," author Kate Chopin utilizes symbolism, diction, and irony to emphasize the effects of Mrs. Mallard's newfound sense of freedom, and how that ultimately results in her death.
In both her short stories The Story of an Hour and Emancipation: A Life Fable, Kate Chopin presents the them that no matter how terrifying freedom can be, it is always superior to confinement. She does this using literary devises such as tone, symbols and irony.

The story follows Chopin’s character Mrs. Mallard who is introduced at the same time she is receiving news of her husband’s death. The story is largely a mixture of radical views for its time, subtle meanings, and symbolism. While modern day readers read this story with an open mind, many men - of the 1890’s and much of the 1900’s - would have been outraged at its surface meaning. However, even today Chopin’s story receives criticism for being a gross portrayal of a woman's loss. This is due to the fact that many individuals continue to view the story at face value. Nevertheless, readers of Chopin’s story will find themselves reacting either one extreme or the other. But it is this reader participation that is crucial in determining what the story will be. Despite all beliefs, Mrs. Mallard is a woman who is stuck in her time trying to escape society’s constraints, develop her own identity, all while “coping” with the loss of her husband.
When I left my room, my mother knew that I had gone through a rough time, and I did not want to talk to her about it. Even though there was only a month left in my school year, I promised myself that I would be completely truthful to my friends, my family, my heritage, and myself. I expected all my friends to leave me, but I was fully prepared for this. However, none of this ever happened. My friends didn’t leave me, I wasn’t alone at the lunch table, I wasn’t even seem differently by those around me. I had failed my family by doing this, and I wished I had stopped acting like someone I wasn’t sooner. This is one of the only mistakes I have made which I consider a failure because it had taken me close to a year to fix, and this is why I consider it my most successful failure.
