The story begins here:
I was laying on my couch, it was a midsummer afternoon. I was going through some of my supervisor 's articles and conference speeches. As a senior educator of Malaysia, he pointed out very rightly, the importance of language learning in the advancement of knowledge. Being a bi lingual or multilingual is a blessing as every language comes with its inherent knowledge which is important for the cognitive development of a learner. So learning a second language and become proficient in the language is a very common phenomenon in twenty first century. However, English is the most common second or foreign language that is used almost all over the world. And It is also same for my country, Bangladesh.
All of a sudden, an important

The history of English language learning is very old, since the British colonial period English is taught as foreign language. It is also the second language but not officially recorded. So to determine the context McArthur (1996) locates Bangladesh in the ESL territories but again he says in Bangladesh English is neither a second language nor is if a foreign language. The present era of language teaching is very critical, in the light of the fact that there are two language mediums of students in Bangladesh have two standardized approaches; Bengali and English are taught simultaneously in primary school, college and tertiary level. Hence, communicative language teaching method and syllabus by national curriculum and text book board (NCTB) in the curriculum is the new inclusion on board of typical structural- Grammar Translation Method based curriculum. So moreover that’s how the English language learning has been taking place. However, still we are facing a very crucial question in teaching English like: three mediums of education; Bangali, English and religious education named madrasha and their different English teaching styles. Basically rich people send their children to English medium schools and colleges or some very good Bengali medium institutions. Pallavi Polanki’s article “Operation Mind Your Language” addresses the issue on the lack of English teachers in Afghanistan. As more and more Americans go to Afghanistan, the demand for English increases greatly. The government not only need English speakers to work as their consultants, but also need qualified English teachers to teach children English. Many students are sponsored by the Afghan government to join a program of NCERT, National Council of Education Research and Trainning, to study English language. The government provides scholarships for them to get trained on how to become English teachers. It is a precious opportunity for those students to learn English in India. Some
In today’s society, especially in the United States, most people are monolingual English speakers. As a result, these monolingual speakers are at a significant disadvantage compared to those who speak more than one language fluently. This disadvantage is crucial to realize since it is important to learn how individuals and the nation can be enhanced. Multilingual speakers have an advantage in global affairs that involve countries that speak different languages. Speaking multiple languages makes it easier to communicate with people when involved in foreign affairs. Those who speak multiple languages are also more aware of other cultures in society. Monolingual speakers are not as exposed to other cultures and have difficulty understanding or even recognizing them. Furthermore, being multilingual increases your
As you move across countries and culture it is becoming increasing evident that English is a very wide-spread and dominant language. With this excessive use of English comes a wide range of forms of the language and literacy. The English language has been changed and manipulated by factors including time, culture, different social classes and different modes of communicating. Literacy has also changed over time and is now no longer just about writing and reading but can be split into two categories including multi-modal and multiplicity. Teachers shoals be embracing these changes in language and also be aware that students will have different forms of English.
Learning a language is quite possibly one of the most difficult and time- consuming endeavors a person could ever undertake. Therefore, it comes as no surprise, that a limited number of second languages are taught in schools across the western world, and languages are sometimes failed to be passed on to children growing up in a different country than their parents did. Even in Canada, an officially bilingual country, only 15% of Canadians speak English and one unofficial language (Statistics Canada 2008) and in America, only 21% of the population is versed in two languages (Logan, 2003). It has become apparent that there is a need for Canadians and Americans to learn a second language. For a country to survive, it needs to rely on other countries as there is no one country that can produce within it’s borders all the means to meet the needs of it’s people. Furthermore, with the threat of international terrorism, the economic crisis and environmental ruin looming above countries all over the world, governments and organizations need to work together to come up with solutions. These cross culture collaborations would not be possible without the ability of even a few people present to speak each other’s languages. Conversely, by remaining monolingual, skills and knowledge will become concentrated only in certain countries and as the transfer of knowledge will cease the rate of human advancement will slow. This report intends to discuss the interpersonal and personal benefits of learning a second language, and investigate different ways of learning. To accomplish this, I have conducted secondary research into the interpersonal and personal benefits of learning another language. These particular areas of research were cho...

Nowadays English was an international language, it was widely used; it was not just for education purpose, but was gradually spread in other sectors, especially in the economic sector. On 6th May 2002, the then Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir announced that government willing to reintroduce English as a medium of instruction. And on 11th May 2002, the then Education Minister Musa Mohamad established a bilingual system that set up with English used for teaching science and mathematics (Tan, 2005, p. 50).
In the last century, there has been major shifts in attitudes towards language teaching and learning. Language was previously viewed as a system that can be acquired through focusing on grammar, that view influenced some teaching methods such as Grammar Translation Method, Audiolingual Method and Situational Language Teaching (Nunan 2001). Scholars started to question the validity of such methods, because they have noticed that although students had a good knowledge of the language rules, they were unable to use the language to communicate (Larsen-Freeman 2001). In other words, students should learn linguistics skills as well as communicative skills (Richards and Rodgers 2001). Littlewood (2002:1) commented, "the structural view

The work of Karahan (2007) shows that English learners do not recognize English language position and advantages in their daily life and they postpone learning English till adulthood by the time they are forced by professional requirements. In addition to this problem, English learners not only cannot encourage each other both also they criticise each other pitilessly -especially while they are speaking- with unsuitable ways which make learning difficult. Turning to Karahan (2007), one finds that it is peculiar that students cannot connive their mistake while speaking Engl...
If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his own language that goes to his heart.” ‒ Nelson Mandela. In most institutions of learning today, the classes are made up of students from different ethnic backgrounds. These have different traditions and also speak different languages. In a typical classroom, the majority of the students will speak the same language. The teacher must then employ strategies which will accommodate all the students in the class. This will ensure that every learner gets the best quality of education. This will enable them to be better prepared for career and expressing themselves. In this paper, strategies to assist learners of the English language in their literal development for third grade learners. New strategies and research that will help the English language learners to gain in depth mastery of the language will also be discussed. Teachers should have the understanding that cultures are what give someone identity and therefore no student should leave their culture for another. Instead, there should be the blending of different cultures so that students can appreciate and learn from each other.

With the growing importance of multiple language ability, more and more parents think of bilingual or multilingual education, which means acquisitions of two or more languages, for their kids.
