What Is Nursing?
A beautiful thing about our world is that everybody sees, describes, and defines things differently. But when it comes to defining a nurse or nursing, there are some key words that any person in our world would use. The American Nurses Association (ANA) (2016) defines nursing as:
The protection, promotion, and optimization of health and abilities, prevention of illness and injury, facilitation of healing, alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response, and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, groups, communities, and populations. (What is Nursing section, para. 1)
Those key words like protection, promotion, prevention, healing, and advocacy are the reasons why I want to be a nurse.

I will have completed my Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree and possibly my Masters as well. I envision myself traveling from state to state, contract to contract. Not only will I be seeing the sights and tourist stops of our country, but I will be healing and caring for many different types of people who will need me. Being said, 10 years from now I plan to be settled in one location with my family. At 35, I’ll possibly have my Doctorates degree and be decided on what I want to specialize in. Whether it be pediatrics, infectious disease, dermatology, or even teaching student nurses at a local college, I know that 10 years from now I will be a successful nurse who is making a …show more content…
I also need to balance my job, health, and family. Working the front desk at a fitness facility helps me immensely in balancing my life demands. It is a very slow paced job with a lot of down time. Therefore, I am able to study and do my homework while getting paid by my job! I also get a free gym membership, and working out relieves my stress, keeps me healthy, and helps me sleep better at night. I will also try my best to eat a balanced diet and get the vitamins that I need. I will be living with my family until I graduate, so I will always be around to continue to spend time with them. Last, I will always make time to watch my favorite TV shows or go out with my friends in order to get my mind off of school. “A nurse experiences stress unknown to most professions” (Masters, 2017, p199). That tells me that it is essential to start these good habits now, stick with them, and carry them into the future to be the best nurse I can
The majority of our society holds the notion that nurses are no more than trained professionals, working for a doctor, who simply provide medical care for the sick and informed. However, what nursing means to me goes deeper than that belief. Nursing is a profession in which individuals are responsible for not only the care of the sick and infirmed but are also responsible for being a support system and an educator, as well as an advocate for the promotion of optimal care. In today’s society, nurses are an important part of any medical facility’s investment. This paper will address the many different aspects of nursing in which nurse’s act as not only caregivers but also act as, counselors and educators.
What is a nurse? According to the dictionary, a nurse is someone who is trained to care for sick or injured people. Nurses are well respected because they are in a skilled profession and work to remain accident free. Even though nurses are well respected there are stereotyped every day and many people have biased opinions about them. Some of which include being stereotyped as all being women, a profession many call men gay for being involved in, always working in a hospital, will always marry someone that is the medical field, all nurses wear white hospital gowns and a cap, that nursing is easy, are reject doctors, they are all the same, and they do not make a lot of money.
Being accountable to me as a professional is saying yes to the call and responsibility we have to bear out. It is a responsibility we take for ourselves and for others who rely on us to be present in any situations. The mission requires an openness to relationship with others. The consistency of performing at a higher level each time the job is done and strive to give all for the greatest good. In collaboration with others involved. That bond can strengthen when everyone involved intersect their effort to the same purpose. The skills acquired over the years as a bedside nurses give me an opportunity to be dependable and trustworthy. Knowing what to do in difficult situations and being intuitive is a plus. It can help in a managerial position
According to the American Nurses Association, nursing is defined as “the protection, promotion, and optimization of health and abilities, prevention of illness and injury, facilitation of healing, alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response, and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, groups, communities, and populations” (American Nurses Association, 2016). Nurses have many jobs and responsibilities and wear many different hats. Nurses can perform at many different levels depending on their scope of practice which is defined by the board of nursing in one’s state of residence. It is important as nurses to understand and follow
Once upon a time, my best friend, Bryan Martinez, often heard his mother’s medical conversations with friends. One day at school, our teacher confronted Mrs. Martinez and told her that she was able tell that Bryan was a son from a nurse. Apparently there was an incident at school where a little boy was acting out and Bryan told our teacher that the little boy was agitated, and to give him some medication to calm him down. As demonstrated by Bryan, nursing is ongoing profession that promotes the health and well-being of individuals.
There are a variety of definitions that organizations create to aid in a better understanding of the importance nursing holds in providing safe, patient centered health care to the community. For example, The International Council of Nurses states that “nursing encompasses autonomous and collaborative care of individuals of all ages, families, groups, and communities sick or well, and in all settings. Nursing includes the promotion of health; prevention of illness; and the care of ill, disabled, and dying people. Advocacy, promotion of a safe environment, research, participation in shaping health policy and in patient and health systems management, and education are also key nursing roles” (Potter & Perry, 2016, p.3).
I believe that nursing is a growing field with new advancements that will assist nurses in their line of work now and in the future. I want to take part in that change as I move forward in becoming a nurse. It has always been my dream of becoming a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner, and I am determined to accomplish this goal. I am extremely grateful for how far I have come in school and the goals I have achieved. Each day I am eager to learn and discover new things and meet new people who will help shape me into a well-rounded
Barnet, Diane, RN. "What Does It Mean to Be a Nurse?" Working Nurse. N.p., 2014.
The interview began with the student asking the nurse to define what is nursing in her own words, the nurse stated that nursing is taking care of another human being holistically, which is not just the body, but taking care of the person as a whole, taking his or her emotional, mental and spiritual well-being into consideration in order to provide the best care possible. It’s also having the ability to assess, identify the problem, communicate and implement. Being a nurse is a calling and it is part of the person.
Nursing has always been a key career in the health care system. Although it is not often focused on in media and stories surrounding health care, nursing is a career of great importance. If any patient was asked about their experience at a hospital or a care center, many will mention the capability and care that they received from the nurses. The health care system could not function efficiently, if at all, if nurses were not present to perform their part. Nurses are more than just physicians support staff. Of interest in this paper is why people choose to study nursing in university or college. From students just graduating high school to mature student who have prior degrees or education, nursing is a popular choice as a path to study
Nursing has many aspects that contribute to its profession. Generally, when speaking with a nurse about why they went into this profession, you will hear it was to help people. Nurses tend to have a very caring attitude when it comes to others. This is one of the reasons I myself became a nurse, and why, I have chosen to further my career by seeking more education. One of the ways that I can educate myself is by learning what nursing means to me, and how I can grow in this profession. Seeking knowledge about how nurses before me saw the field as a profession and, what they thought nursing really meant is one way to do this.
A nurse is a health care professional who cares for ill or disabled individuals, their families and communities ensuring that they attain, maintain or recover optimum health and functioning (Crosta, 2013). There are several kinds of nurses classified depending on their education and experiences. As an example,
I believe that Nursing is a profession that is unique to the individual. My reasons for choosing such a profession is due to the fact that I have a desire to help others. Growing up with a very sick parent of whom I traveled back and forth over the years to many physician offices, lead me to develop my career path at an early age which was nursing. I watched the many doctors and nurses providing care to my mom in such a compassionate way, and as a result of the kindness they showed my sibling and me, I was very much aware this was as some may say, “my calling”. I had a conversation with my mom and told her that one day I was going to be a nurse so that I could care for her in the same manner that I saw the nurses and physicians caring for her. I wanted to
Defining what a nurse is varies from person to person. Some have described a nurse as a person who shows care to their patients while others say that nurses assist to regain the ill’s health back. There is no wrong answer in defining what a nurse is. Moreover, I believe that a nurse is one who treats their patients with the dignity and respect that they deserve, and assists them in promoting and preventing their health illness and lastly, enhancing their health to optimal status. Nursing is viewed as a human science because nurse must display a connection with each patient. One must view the patients as a person, who has feelings, who behaves a certain way and who deserve to be well cared for. In addition, nursing is not a profession that treats
Nursing is a discipline of knowledge acquired through formal education and through life experiences. My philosophy of nursing is to always see the beauty in the art of being a nurse. I chose nursing as my profession as caring for people and the nursing profession is a true art form.
