The Mentally Disabled – Option 1 There is a class of individuals that are marginalized and likely do not even know it. In fact, many are sheltered form the world and cared for much like a toddle would be when he or she is young and ignorant to the world and its many advisories. In fact, mentally disabled people are often oblivious that that they are any different than those that are not mentally disabled. Sadly, the socioeconomic status of disabled people mirrors the lower class citizens as opportunities for education and upward mobility to an independent financial status above poverty is not likely attainable. Disabled and Marginalized The livelihood of mentally disabled people can range from quite sever to rather functional, as varying degrees of disabled exist. The marginalization of mentally disabled people can rear its head throughout society regardless of socioeconomic class. Children that do not understand the gravity of their statements, chastise those with disabilities by teasing them and mimicking them in offensive manners. This paradigm shift focused education towards the ambivalent nature that society held regarding the mentally disabled; thereby humanizing them into accommodating homes rather than ostracizing them to institutions to live out their days like criminals. Unfortunately, even with access to quality care and inclusion with others that do not have known mental disabilities, children that are on the threshold of adolescence face numerous challenges and scrutiny from peers due to poor social skills and diminished academic achievements (Poppen, Sinclair, Hirano, Lindstrom, & Unruh
