Ethel Waters overcame a very tough childhood to become one of the most well known African American entertainers of her time. Her story, The Eye on the Sparrow, goes into great detail about her life and how she evolved from taking care of addicts to becoming the star of her own show. Ethel was born by her mother being raped at a young age. Her father, John Waters, was a pianist who played no role in Ethel’s life. She was raised in poverty and it was rare for her to live in the same place for over a year. Ethel never fit in with the rest of the crowd; she was a big girl, about five nine when she was a teenager, and was exposed to mature things early in her life. This is what helped shape Ethel to be the strong, independent woman she is.

Throughout history, the story of womankind has evolved from struggles to achievements, while some aspects of the lives of women have never changed. Poet Dorianne Laux writes about the female condition, and women’s desire to be married and to have a home and children. She also seems to identify through her poetry with the idea that women tend to idealize the concept of marriage and settling down and she uses her poetry to reach out to the reader who may have similar idyllic views of marriage or the married lifestyle. Though Dorianne Laux’s poem “Bird” reads very simply, it is actually a metaphor for an aspect of this female condition.
And No Birds Sang is the story of a young Canadian man, Farley Mowat. The story begins September 2nd, 1939 with a young Farley painting his parents porch when his dad pulls into the driveway and excitedly claims the war is on! Farley was an eager eighteen year old with the aspiration of joining the air force and becoming a fighter pilot. In one month he presented to the Royal Canadian Air Force, he was rejected due to his young age and slim build. Instead he was enlisted in the 2nd Battalion called the Hasty Pees, with the expectation of being transferred to the 1st Battalion and active service. The story follows Mr. Mowat and his experiences during multiple battles as the Allies invaded and eventually took over Italy. The title comes shortly after Farley’s first battle when everything was quiet in the air and no birds sang.

In To Kill A Mockingbird, Mockingbirds play a small role in the plot, but convey a larger meaning. They represent many different characters throughout the book, including Tom Robinson, Scout Finch, Mr.Raymond and Boo Radley. The citizens of Maycomb saw these characters as outcasts and persecuted them. Harper Lee titled her book To Kill A Mockingbird because Tom, Mr.Raymond and Boo represent the mockingbird itself, while Scout, as the innocent character, represents the mockingbird’s song.
The actual turning point in The Sparrow was when the Utra-Light crashed. However, it was of little interest. The importance of the novel lied within the gardens that were built. The garden the Jesuit mission planted served as the catalyst to the future demise of the group, and especially Emilio. Emilio not only had his body destroyed, but also his soul. The gardens caused a slaughter, an imprisonment, an eventual destruction of the survivor's hands, another death, a rape, and a long period of despair for the only survivor of the overall mission.
In “Silent Spring”, author and biologist Rachel Carson addresses the threat of deadly poisons, specifically parathion, to not only farm pests, but also to the entire milieu of wildlife in and around farmlands. Carson does well to influence and even configure her reader’s thoughts on the liberal use of pest control through rhetoric so to gain the reader’s support. Although diverse and abundant with rhetoric in her composition, three of the most significant and influential applications of rhetoric are through appeals, multiple rhetorical questions, and hyperbolic generalizations.
In this world, everyone has an equal right; however, many people are getting falsely accused of acts they did not commit even though they are innocent. Mockingbirds, one of the most innocent birds, sing their heart out for people to enjoy, however, they getting killed every day. In this novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, there are many racial prejudices going on. Finches stand near the top of the social hierarchy, with Cunningham and Ewells underneath. Black community in Maycomb is even below the Ewells, even if they were a hard worker; they were not treated equally. The “mockingbirds” represents the idea of innocence, so killing a mockingbird is to destroy innocence. Throughout the book, many characters are considered a mockingbird. Three examples are Tom Robinson, Boo Radley, and Mr. Dolphus Raymond. Those three characters are innocent; they are kind and were never harmful to others. However, they were destroyed through contact of evil. In the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, the mockingbirds symbolizes the idea of innocence, and Tom, Boo, and Mr. Raymond are considered one of it.
Christmas spirit can be defined in many different ways and mean many different things. For some people it can be giving to other or it can just spending time together with the people you love. Personally, I don’t really give for Christmas because I always felt like giving was only providing material happiness. Generally for Christmas I just spend time with the family and have fun, laugh and catchup on all the things that has happened over the year. Ebenezer Scrooge on the other hand, lack all of these traits therefore he is regarded as having no Christmas spirit. Scrooge said Christmas was a humbug, refusing to spend time with his family, not giving to anyone and keeping to himself on Christmas. To Scrooge, Christmas was just a waste of time as he makes his worker Bob Cratchit work for grueling hours at low pay, refuses his nephew Fred's Christmas dinner invitation, and turns away two charitable workers seeking donations for the poor.

Satire defined is 'A composition in verse or prose holding up a vice or folly to ridicule or lampooning individuals… The use of ridicule, irony, sarcasm, etc, in speech or writing for the ostensible purpose of exposing and discourage vice or folly'; (Johnston, 5). In other words, satire is the use of humor to expose moral behavior of man. In the Aristophanes' play The Birds, satire is used to mock the common Greek's dream of ruling the gods that they worship. It mocks the power that they seek to become the supreme ruler of the world. To understand Aristophanes use of satire, one must first understand the role satire plays in sending out its message.
In William Shakespeare’s drama Romeo and Juliet, he writes about an unfortunate love between two adolescents in Verona, Italy, during the Renaissance period. In the film West Side Story, Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins direct two characters into a hopeless romance during the 1960s in New York. Even though Romeo and Juliet and West Side Story are distinct due to dissimilar settings, they share an almost identical plot. The personalities of the two female characters shape the futures of their romances in their storylines. Although Maria and Juliet share connections such as being rebellious, Maria is innocent while Juliet is more mature in understanding the concept of having a relationship.
