An individual 's most important goal in life is to be happy. So how can one be happy while bullying is happening? Bullying affects about 50-80% of young people to this day (Department for Children Schools and Families, Special Educational Needs, 2010; Oliver & Candappa, 2003). News stories on the issue make regular appearances on television and newspaper outlets, some that have tragic endings. Bullying is progressively getting worse throughout the education system. There are many effects that bullying has, such as, not being able to concentrate, anxiety, increased risk of dropping out, etc. Each state has it’s own law on bullying.
According to psychological and sociological perspectives, the need to belong and be accepted by others is the most basic human motive that controls behaviors (Honneth, 1995; Maslow, 1970). The bully has the need to be dominant and finds a victim who happens to be seen as weak or an easy target. Not only do people have need to belong and be accepted, but they also need to create and maintain relationships. No child wants to be left out of their group of peers. There are times when children will become aggressive to try and fit in with the others. The social status can be linked with the aggressive behavior during childhood and adolescence years. Most commonly between the ages of 10-14.There is no form of bullying should be tolerated. Bullying in schools must be dealt with as a serious issue; it is not a normal behavior and it can later cause serious mental issues of the individual being bullied. It will not just go away, but it can be controlled if people start to work together and decide to work on the entire system around the children.
