When I was younger I played a popular game of hide-and-seek, me and my friends would go hide and someone would come find me if everyone else was found and they couldn’t find me I would yell Olly olly oxen free! Revealing myself to whom I was hiding from and being the winner of that round. This game is exactly how I would define the Social Penetration Theory because when I first meet someone I hide myself from them. Self-disclosing any information that I feel may scare them or as in relation to the game hide and seek make me loose. In addition I feel that hiding information in the beginning of new relationships will help save the relationship from depenetration. Stunned at the question I didn’t say a word. I felt more comfortable with him by this time however, tears still rolled down my eyes as I started to tell him that her dad is incarcerated and will never be physically apart of hear life. He comforted me and told me that he would not mind being a father figure in my daughter’s life. The response soothed my soul because I knew that information could have caused depentration in our relationship. The information actually made our relationship grow because before him my daughter never had a man correct her, love her or teach her and it made me like him more. In addition he was able to open up and tell me that he had an altercation with his daughters mom but he would never put his hand on a woman. He explained that she punched him in the face and it was a reaction he had that cause the altercation. One of the sociological theories is conflict theory. The conflict theory deals with people's level on wealth, or class. The conflict theory says that social change is beneficial, contrary to focuses on social order. In the story of the woman and her children, the conflict theory plays a big role on the situation. Police of higher class are threatening the homeless woman. The conflict theory is a constant struggle of people of higher class over powering people of lower class, or the weaker. The police are trying to over power the woman by telling her to leave. Even though the woman and her children were doing nothing wrong, the police used their power to tell her to leave. Also the people of the area showed their conflict theory by telling the police officers to come. They must have felt embarrassed to have a woman of such lower class to be around them. They used their power of class to have the woman removed from their community. The woman wants to be there because she has no home and it is a good community to be in, but the people look at it as an embarrassment to them because it makes their area look bad for someone of such lower class to be around them. The conflict theory is unique to all other theories because it separates people into categories determined by their wealth and standards. Their status is the element that categorizes them, weather it is class, race, or gender. The conflict theory do not always use class, race, and gender all at once. When someone goes against something that everyone around expects he or she to act, it’s called norms violations. In other words, that person is doing something which is unacceptable to society or culture. In this sociology breaching experiment, I chose to violate a social norm in public areas – cutting a line without asking, so to observe what people acted and how they responded. I decided to go to Safeway and tried being a line cutter without asking anybody. If they asked me why I did it, I simply replied to them that I did not feel like either wanting to wait or getting in a line. By acknowledging that norms are quite essential in our society, I was aware that our society will have no foundation to stand if there is no norm. In today’s society the theory known as social control theory was a theory that most individuals could have found themselves relating to. Theorists that helped in the development of the social control theory did not ask the one major question of what made an individual a criminal or act in a deviant way, these theorists shared a thought that deviant behavior was to be expected. This theory did not end up becoming popular till the mid 1970’s and the theory really blossomed into three distinct trends (Williams &McShane, 2014). The first trend that was in the social control theory was the reaction to the labeling and conflict orientation and return to the examination of criminal behavior of a deviant individual (Williams &McShane, 2014). It is defined as, “verbally communicating personal information about the self to another person (Forgas 449).” Depending on the stage of the relationship the information can range from thoughts, feelings, goals, fears, dreams, and favorites. Individuals usually maintain protective outer layers that surround a central core that represents the true self. Social Penetration theory suggests that as a relationship becomes increasingly intimate, the self-disclosures become increasingly deep (Tolstedt 85). The sociocultural theory was developed by a theorist named Lev Vygotsky. Vygotsky was born in 1896 and was from the former Soviet Union. He was a psychologist who had an abundance of ideas and put them into many theories and writings. Although Vygotsky died from tuberculosis at the young age of thirty-eight, his most prominent work was done in a short period of ten years. When he died in 1934, the Soviet Union held most of his work and it was not until about 1960 that his work was translated into English. Currently in the education field, Vygotsky’s main work on the sociocultural theory is getting a lot of attention.

In 1969, Travis Hirschi developed what is known as Social Bond Theory. Hirschi built on the work of other social control theorists and was able to provide a better picture of what social bond is. In Social Bond Theory there are four basic elements that make up social bonds. They are attachment, involvement, commitment, and belief. It is these four bonds that all humans hold and ultimately determine conformity or deviant behavior(Agnew, 1985).
Our society is influenced by social norms that guides our everyday behavior. One of the chapters of our social psychology textbook discussed a great deal about conformity. However, what is considered to be appropriate behavior is subject to change depending on the situation; this is what we call “conformity.” Conformity being defined as a change in behavior as a result of the real or imagined influence of other people. The social penetration theory in this relationship was true because in the two years spent together, the longer we stayed together the more we disclosed to each other. We would tell each other a variety of things and as we spent more time together we would disclose more and more information. Although we did disclose information well, when we got into arguments we would not address the conflict and it would just build up until it exploded.

When it comes to comprehending or understanding any concept to why individuals may do some of the things they do, there are social theories out there to help better explain those actions. Sociological theories help to focus more on the aspect of social life, as well as explain behaviors that can be driven by passion, tradition, self-interest, religion, and the laws we have set out today in stone. “Unlike scientific theories, social theories tend to be more evaluative and critical than the theories in the natural sciences” (Appelrouth A. S.; Edles D. L 2012) Today, an analytical frame is used to help guide the comparing and contrasting of the several theoretical perspectives and traditions. In simpler terms, this four way frame is basically used to help compare and contrast theorist better. There are four main cells that make up this analytical frame which include, individual-rational, individual-nonrational, collective-rational, and collective-nonrational. Also included into this basic theoretical orientation or framework, are the core classical theorists. Those influential theorists included into the framework are Mead, who falls into the individual-nonrational side, Durkheim whom falls into the collective-nonrational side, Weber whom falls into the collective-rational side, and Marx who is also included into the collective-rational side.
