The Zipper Unzipped: Exploring the History of the Zipper The journey may have been hard and long, but the invention of the zipper was one that changed the world. In three different time periods, the zipper patent was given to three different inventors, but was only pursued by two. The main effects of the zipper were its uses in the clothing industry and its immediate acceptance into society. The invention of the zipper changed many ways society worked, even though it took many years to have a good copy hit the market. Even though it was an up and down journey, the creation of the zipper impacted generations to come. When the zipper was first invented, its first use was not on clothing. “The major uses for the zipper were for boots and tobacco pouches” (Dean). Thanks to Gideon Sundback’s easy-to-use zipper design, the zipper became very popular on many items. Zippers became so popular in society when Sundback’s version first came out that he was making hundreds of feet of zippers every day (Bellis). The zipper was first called a clothing closer or a slide fastener; it wasn’t always called zipper. “It wasn’t until the B.F. Goodrich Company decided to use Gideon’s fastener on a new type of rubber boot - they renamed the fastener to zipper and the name stuck” (Dean). The fashion industry had not accepted zippers into their designs yet and still prefered to use buttons. “It would be another twenty years before the fashion industry would promote the closer on garments” (Dean). After those long years, zippers were finally introduced onto men’s clothing. While zippers were being used on men’s clothing, buttons were used on women’s clothing until 1920 (Gurel).
