In 1619, Africans served as indentured servants, who earned land and freedom in exchange of seven years of hard labor. Indentured servants include 20 kidnapped Africans who were brought in Virginia(an isolated British settlement on Chesapeake Bay) on White Lion, a badly damaged Dutch ship.
