Owen Paterson said “The relationship between renewable energy sources and the communities we expect to host them must be appropriate and sustainable and, above all, acceptable to local people.” For that reason, environmentalists have long assumed that wind power is a much more efficient and sustainable way to generate electricity. However, non-supporters of wind power state otherwise because there are a few negative outcomes to using wind power. Ultimately, when it came to the nature of wind power the basic assumption was that it is beneficial to the environment and communities. Although wind power may seem of concern to a small group of environmentalist, it should in fact concern anyone who cares about the environment and the world we live in. In the book The World is Flat author Thomas Friedman emphasizes a few crucial rules on how individuals and businesses can thrive in a globalizing world. Friedman urges us that globalization has brought interaction and integration in the world and because of this it has put individuals and businesses in a crucial place to compete with one another. Therefore, if Yakima wants to compete in a globalizing world they should embrace wind power because it will help attract irreplaceable jobs; jobs that Friedman calls “untouchable” jobs. Wind power would also establish localized/anchored jobs; jobs that cannot be relocated. As well, launching wind power in Yakima would apply one of Thomas Friedman’s rules, which is “the best companies are the best collaborators”. Emphasizing on this notion wind power in Yakima would help the town become a great collaborator with others making wind power well known urging other companies to collaborates with them.
