Would you rather have something or be something? Or have you ever stopped to think what the difference was between having and being? In actuality having and being are two totally different things and the purpose of this paper will be to provide evidence of the differences. Throughout this paper many different short stories and poems will be referenced in order to adequately describe the meaning of having or being. Some of these include My Last Duchess, The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber, Everyday Use, and The Destructors, The remaining portion of this paper will describe the differences between having or being set by examples from short stories and poems that have been analyzed.
Before moving on further into the discussion of the differences between having and being, this section of the paper is going to define each term. The term having is something you have or own. It is a possession that one contains within or on them. In addition, with the term having the feelings of happiness or pleasure can be brought forth. Also, there are single identifier words that describe having. These include I-it, mechanistic, conformity, and objects. These are all words that describe and give meaning to the term having. Now that there is an understanding of having, lets describe being. Being is defined as living as something. Being is an act of presence and not necessarily having any importance. Also, being is defined as someone or something that is generic in their own way. Identification words that describe to being include I-thou, organic, uniqueness, and presences. Now that there is an understanding of the meaning of both terms the next and remaining portion of the paper will provide the short story and poem examples.

...he does not necessarily want the quilt but she wants to follow the heritage and ideas behind the quilt. The quilt has a white sense of heritage followed from a black tradition. This is opposite of Dee where she just wants to possess the quilt, but Maggie actually wants to be the quilt in a sense. Maggie wants to use the quilt like her grandmother did, and follow the same principles of her family. Both of these scenarios show and display the difference between having and being. Just is this story the quilt was a possession that Dee had to have, but Maggie wanted to be the quilt and follow its traditions.
In summary all of these pieces of literature exemplify the difference between having and being. Each story shows it in a different way, but in the end there is a clear difference between having and being whether it is objects, possessions, feelings, or traditions.

Many people show their appreciation for things in different ways. Dee appreciates the quilt for being her heritage. She can't express enough how she feels about it. She can't even imagine that the quilt was hand made with every stitch stroked in and out. As for Maggie, Dee believes she can't appreciate the quilt in the same way she can. "Maggie can't appreciate these quilts." Instead, she thinks that Maggie will use the quilt for about 5 or so years and it will turn into a rag. "She'd probably be backward enough to put them to everyday use." "Maggie would put them on the bed and in five years they'd be in rags. Less than that!" Dee doesn't feel Maggie deserves the quilt.
Dee is the healthy one who has new thinking’s college student. But she still wants to find black culture. However, the mother and Maggie did not think it. To begin with a quilt is defined as a “coverlet made of scrapes and fragments stitched together to forming a pattern” (Webster). The quilt in “Everyday Use” was made by Grandma Dee, Big Dee, and Mama from scraps of dresses and shirts and part of Grandpa’s Civil War uniform. It is filled with memories and was hand stitched by the family. Mama suggests that Dee take other ones, but Dee rejects the offer because they were “stitched by machine”(Walker, p.114) and the old ones were done by hand. Mama says that she had promised them to Maggie. Dee then replies that Maggie would “be backward enough to put them to everyday use” (Walker,p.114). Mama says she hope Maggie will use them every day. This begins what is means to use and misuse heritage.
In the story, it states, “‘These are all pieces of dresses Grandma used to wear. She did all this stitching by hand. Imagine!’... ‘Maggie can’t appreciate these quilts!’ she said. ‘She’d probably be backward enough to put them to everyday use.’ ‘I reckon she would,’ I said. ‘God knows I been saving ‘em for long enough with nobody using ‘em. I hope she will!’ (Walker 320). This quote explains how Dee believes she should have the quilts made by her grandmother because her sister would put them to everyday use. Dee believes that the quilts are so valuable to her heritage that they needed to hang the quilts, treating them like foreign objects, in order to appreciate their value. Conversely, the narrator believes that their heritage would be appreciated by using how they were intended to be used, which is why she later decides to give the quilts to Maggie instead of Dee. I recently read Earnest Hemingway's "The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber." This is a story about a thirty-five year old man, Francis Macomber who is on an African safari hunt with his wife, Margot. Led by his guide, Robert Wilson, Macomber tries to display his manhood by killing dangerous creatures. This in fact has the exact opposite effect when he humiliates himself by running from a wounded lion. Samuel Shaw stated in Earnest Hemingway, "…this is about much more than a hunting yarn, although it is that, too. It is a story that examines that elemental bases of the male-female relationship and the sources of human freedom and dependence" (82). The situation is complicated when Margot sleeps with Wilson and Macomber knows about it. Macomber has another chance to prove himself when they go into an island of trees to shoot a wounded buffalo. This time he stands his ground and shoots repeatedly as the buffalo charges forward. Seeing the whole situation from the car Margot shoots at the last instant, and in a brilliant ending by Hemmingway, misses and hits Macomber right in the back of the head, leaving the reader to wonder, "Did she mean to hit him?" Prevalent in this story is Hemmingway's use of the literary conventions conflict and ambiguity.
Acosta portrays the quilt as a memoir type deal and makes it into a precious piece of herself for her kids to have with them. Walker signifies the quilts as being special to her and her family heritage and refused to give them to someone who won't respect their meaning, even if it is her own daughter. Anything has what it takes to be of some significance and it doesn’t matter what that thing is. What means the most is how valued that significance is and how well the heritage is kept
Bravery, courageousness and fearlessness all are words that can be used to describe someone who is manly or masculine. None of these words are can be used when talking about Francis Macomber. Rich and successful, Macomber never needed to prove his masculinity to nobody. Even though undefined, in the short story “The Short Happy Life Of Francis Macomber” Masculinity is the main theme developed through the uses of imagery, symbolism and irony. At the beginning of their African Safari Hunt, Francis Macomber struggles to deal with his fear of death, while his wife takes part in adulterous activities with the leader of the hunt, Robert Wilson. Wilson is everything that Macomber is not. Brave and courageous, Wilson is desired by Margot for possessing all of the masculine qualities, and even her marriage to Macomber does not stop her from getting what she wants. Francis Macomber must overcome his fears and reach the epitome of his masculinity if he hopes to return from this African Safari with his wife, and most importantly his own life.
While one way of thought is factual, more literal, another is more reflective and abstract. In Henry Reed’s “Naming of Parts”, Reed uses both approaches to thinking with his speakers, and this allows his poem to include different points of view and tones. The two speakers are evident in different lines of “Naming of Parts”, and when they merge, they have a different meaning than both alone. Other poetry devices are used to convey the different speakers’ voices, and to also make the poem flow better and sound more harmonious. “Naming of Parts” has a more literal and commanding voice seen in all lines but 5, a more thoughtful and abstract voice seen only in line 5, convergence which allows more interpretations of the each speakers’ lines, diction and imagery which contrasts the two speakers, and rhythmic and sound devices unify the poem as a whole.

The quilt signifies the family pride and history, which is important to Mama.
