American schools have become the crime scenes of numerous murders throughout the centuries. "From 1760 until 2010, in the United States alone, there have been more than 310 documented school shootings on school property"(Duplechain and Morris 1). Teachers and students do not consider school a dangerous place and never recognize that they could experience such a horrendous situation. However, the causes related to the shootings include gun control, bullying, and the lack of attention towards potential shooters. School shootings have no place in our nation 's schools, for this reason we need to educate ourselves with the causes in order to prevent shootings in the future. "School shootings are mostly committed by a student who goes to the school or an intruder from off campus who has a connection to someone in a particular school"(Duplechain and Morris 1). The shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary and Columbine High School illustrate this. The heartbreaking shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary transpired on December 14,2012 becoming the second deadliest shooting in the U.S. According to The Washington Post, twenty eight people died, including twenty children from ages 5 to 10. The murderer was Adam Lanza, a twenty year old who "had significant mental health issues that affected his ability to live a normal life and to interact with others"(Smith). As a result of his untreated mental issues, Lanza opened fire at the school his mother taught kindergarten at. "It has been found that two thirds of school shooters obtained their firearms from their own home, or the home of a relative," just like Lanza did (Towers et al. 1). The guns he used were a Bushmaster XM-15 rifle and a .22-caliber Savage Mark rifle that were registered under his mothe... ... middle of paper ... ...o, "wireless panic alarms need to be made available in every school. If a situation warranting concern arises, an alarm could be sounded to simultaneously alert the school and local law-enforcement officials"(Duplechain and Morris 4). Next, teachers and students need to become “situationally aware” of their surroundings and report any suspicious behavior immediately. "Lastly, parents need to be the main advocates pushing educators and elected officials to do whatever is necessary to improve the security of their schools"(Duplechain and Morris 4). School violence is something that will continue to exist. However, schools administration along with the community can manage to do proactive things to keep violence from happening. School shootings can be prevented with the knowledge necessary to see the warning signs, along with the underlying causes of potential shooters.
