In The Selection series by Kiera Cass, the main character, America, undergoes experiences that change her life to the highest extent.When America is met she lives in Carolina, a section of Illéa, then she is chosen to take part in The Selection. She is immediately brought up the caste system from a five to a three. When she is home in Carolina she is happy and feels supported by her family. Then, when she is brought to Angeles, she feels targeted by the other selected and extrinsic in her new environment. In the first novel, The Selection, America says, “. . . here I was expecting at the very best a cordial welcome from the girls who were prepared to fight me to the death for someone I didn’t want” (pg. 80). She can be jealous and deceiving at times. Her jealousy of the other selected girls is very poignant when she sees that Maxon is giving them more gifts and affection than he is to her. The text in the first book states that, “. . . pointing to two beautiful hair ornaments that were covered in what looked like thousands of dollars’ worth of precious stones . . . This set the room into a new flurry of excitement and disappointment, and my newborn confidence disappeared” (pg. 259-260). However, she seems as though she loves Maxon, but she has an affair with Aspen when he comes to work as a guard at the palace. She even thought that, “When he touched me like that, called me that name, I felt like I was a world away. Upset as I was, Aspen felt like home” (pg. 292). She has feelings for both men.
