The Secret Life of Walter Mitty is a story written by James Thurber. In this story Walter Mitty is an old married man with quite the imagination. He daydreams in this story and imagines himself to be five different people with important roles in life. Mitty thinks that he is a person of significance in his dreams to make up for his boring married life.
In The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, Mitty imagines that he is five different people of importance. The first person that Mitty imagines he is a Lieutenant in the Navy named Berg. Mitty is the commander of a Navy hydroplane commanding his crew to go through a hurricane. This image of Mitty shows him as a heroic and intense captain of his crew. Although his crew views Mitty as being crazy they still look up to him and trust their life’s in his hands. The second character Mitty pretends to be is an experienced surgeon. In this scenario that Mitty dreams up he is attempting to save the life of a millionaire banker named Wellington McMillian. Everyone looks up to Mitty in his daydreams and Mitty assumes a position of importance. For example, Mitty saves a millionaire's life by performing surgery and by fixing a machine the man is hooked up to (Thurber 393). However, in Mitty’s real life he really has no importance and just obeys his wife and follows her commands. This is shown when Mitty drops his wife off to get her hair done and has to go buy overshoes because she requests it (Thurber 393). Mrs. Mitty is a strict old woman who does everything in her will to keep her husband in line. You can tell in the story that Walter does not even try to fight with her but rather just let her have her way. The reader in this story is supposed to find humor in this old couple by the way Mrs. Mitty keeps Walter in line. That is how Thurber uses humor in this
