The Second Brother is the most physically abusive antagonist in Chinese Cinderella. Adelina Yen Mah uses specific literary devices in order to show us how malicious the Second Brother can be when it comes to the treatment towards Wu Mei. He is depicted through dialogue and action as being a very sneaky, hostile sibling in the family. In addition to the negative behavior that is shown the Second brother also goes into acts of physical violence towards Wu Mei. Besides physically attacking his sister by twisting her arm the Second also verbally abuses her severely. Since the author uses very descriptive dialogue in the excerpt the reader can form their own view of the character of the Second Brother. When the Second Brother thumps his sister …show more content…
It is shown how he twists Wu Mei’s arm, thumps her on the head, and takes her things. These attacks on her by Second Brother are done in the form of sneak attacks in order to avoid the fear of getting in trouble with his father. That author shows us that when the Father walks in the Second Brother immediately lets go of Wu Mei’s arm. He did not let go because he just decided to let go out of boredom. The action that the author has written comes to the understanding that the Second Brother lets go out of pure panic as to the punishments his father could bestow onto him for picking on his little sister. In another instance where action is a key point of establishing the Second Brother’s characterization as a secondary antagonist is when all of Wu Mei’s siblings steal her dragon’s eyes. “Without a word, she reached over and snatched two dragon’s eyes from my bowl as she left the room. My three brothers followed her example.” The author specifically puts this action into her story for the sole purpose of showing that the Second Brother is not an independent tormentor. Instead he is shown to be a follower rather than a leader. Furthermore, this gives The Second Brother motivation to hurt his sister since there is a hidden rule among the siblings that being harsh to Wu Mei is perfectly
Have you ever been affected by a sibling or met someone that has? Weather you have or not, you should know that there are many effects caused by having a sibling. Well in the book Tangerine By Edward Bloor, Paul is affected by his brother Erik on many more occasions than any sibling should be. In this book Eriks choices affect Paul by forcing him to look like a freak, become embarrassed, and feel like a loser.
Many can identify with what it means to be a sibling. Whether you are the oldest, youngest, or somewhere in between, you can most likely relate to the individual struggle within one. Being the oldest may carry the burden of responsibility and a sense of duty, and the youngest may feel a sense of entitlement. Whichever place one holds may depend on the person. Mai Lee Chai’s “Saving Sourdi” tells the story of two sisters who came to America with the hope of finding freedom. The two girls found anything but that. The younger sister Nea, takes the unusual role of the guardian, while the older sister Sourdi is atypically being cared for by Nea.
An analysis of Bao Chu’s nurturing positive anima, Huiang Niang , underlines his maturation into an honorable warrior. Indeed, after Bao Chu volunteers to complete his father’s mission, he tells his mother that “no matter how long I am away, do not let your heart grieve for me” (22). Bao Chu remains in touch with his feminine side by appealing to his mother’s emotions and by telling her to stay strong, instead of adhering to a strict warrior persona. Moreover, after the demons attempt to con Hui Niang into thinking Bao had died so that “her tears would weaken Bao Chu”, she thinks of her sons parting words instead choosing to remain hopeful (23). Thus, Hui Niang’s faithful nature is responsible for her son’s inevitable success. Finally, when

Jacqueline Schectman is a therapist who has focused on the psychological pattern finding archetypes brought out by stories that resonate with the readers own experiences. She attempts to bridge the connection between the reader 's imagination and real life. In “Cinderella” and a Loss of Father-Love, Schectman takes what her clients take from Cinderella, and uses it to understand their case better. Their interpretation of the story Cinderella reveals what they tend to relate with in their personal lives. While in The Truth about Cinderella, Martin Daly and Margo Wilson explain the statistics of stepparent domestic abuse towards children, sexual and domestic violence. While both authors use Cinderella and her wicked stepmother as the analogy between children and their stepparents, Jacqueline Schectman focuses more on emotional abuse, while Martin Daly and Margo Wilson emphasize physical abuse.
Most children experience agony and hope as they face the struggles of sibling rivalry throughout their childhood. This situation has been experienced by children, of whom may or may not have siblings, for hundreds of years. Several stories represent this crisis, including the Biblical story of Abel and Cain which was written over 3000 years ago. Abel of whom was forced to be Cain’s ash-brother. Cain had developed an intense feeling of jealousy of Abel when his offering to the Lord was rejected while Abel’s was accepted. This caused him great agony, but he wasn’t the only one. The fairytale “Cinderella” encompasses the ideas of sibling rivalry as well as the agonies and hopes that correspond with it.
Sibling rivalry is one of humanity 's ancient issues. The Bible narrated about one of the first stories of the rivalry between two siblings, Cain and Abel. The elder brother, Cain was a farmer and Abel was the pastor of sheep. And both brothers have made a sacrifice for God. Cain brought to the Lоrd an оffering of the fruit оf the grоund, and Abel for his part brought оf the firstlings of his flоck. However, God had regard for Abel and his оffering, but for Cain and his оffering he had nо rеgаrd. Consequently, Cain killed his brother. Obviously, the story of these two brothers has a sorrowful ending. So this is one of variety of the stories within the Bible shows the great significance given to the problem of sibling rivalry. Nowadays the problem
Children have a tendency to believe and feel that they are to blame when things in their family go wrong. This is more common in older siblings and brothers, these children tend to feel that they should have protected their siblings or done something to make things better for them. In these case they feel that they have failed to do their job as the older sibling or brother. This guilt could cause the sibling to become destructive or they could become a strong support for the abused child and help them getting them though the stress of the prosecution and the issue that result with in the family. The bond between siblings can sometimes mean more to a child then the bond between parent and child. This is expressed in the book ‘The Sibling Bond’ with the statement “The sibling relationship is life’s longest lasting relationship, longer, for the most of us by a quarter of a century, than our ties to our parents,” (Bank and Kahn
To start with, a good way to ruin someone’s day is by physically assaulting them. A slap to the face is a great way to start a fight with them, or leave a mark on their face. Another example is to poke them in the eye, which is a great way to make them scream “OWW!” or to blind them for a short period. But the most evil of all pushing them down the stairs, now there is a way to make someone’s day terrible. This would work really well for someone such as your brother, but physically assaulting someone else will
Amy Tan’s short story Two Kinds revolves around Jing-mei, a young girl whose life consists of trying to please her mother and then resenting her. At a young age, Jing-mei aspires to greatness along with her mother. As time went on, Jing-mei began to rebel against her and the times when she attempted to see some kind of special talent in her. She continually never tries her best and dismisses her mother’s efforts. Through thoughts, conflict, and actions, the author reveals Jing Mei as a determined and independent girl who is unappreciative of others.
The story two kinds by Amy Tan is a motivational story and somewhat heartbreaking. It’s a powerful example of conflicting personalities and needs that cause a struggle between the parent and child. This story relates to most family’s today such as parents trying to push their kids to become something they were not meant to be. The title of this short story “Two Kinds” is describes the theme of this story itself. The mother had previously stated that there are only two types of daughters. “Those who are obedient and those who follow their own mind”. Jing Mei did not understand or realize the truth or meaning behind that saying until after her mother’s death. Jing Mei realized that her mother only meant that she could be an obedient child by listening to her mother while at the same time follow her own heart and want her own prodigy in life. This story has a lot of meaning behind it when it comes to looking at the characters from their stand point. Throughout this story I focused on both Jing Mei and Suyuan Woo because they have many similarities and differences and it kind of shocks me. They both have different backgrounds and have been influenced by two different cultures. Because they were born into two different cultures they both have different opinions about America and China.
Cinderella is the quintessential representative for stories that focus on the ideas of rags to riches; a chance that things will be alright, similar to the American Dream which was an ideology that was prominent at the time. It’s also a story that display good lessons about life such as how life isn’t always fair, and that even good people can fall under difficult circumstances, but despite this, good choices in those difficult conditions make the experience better later on. It helps to understand the concept of hope, especially to children that have a harder time grasping the visualization of the topic. Such visualization is shown through the characterization of the main protagonist Cinderella, and how she, despite being in such a desolate situation, had made hopes and dreams to escape the problems that she has by wishing.
In the beginning of the story, Kambili is a fifteen year old girl who is painfully shy, her brother, Jaja, is a seventeen year old whom is beginning to rebel against his devout, abusive and perfectionist father. The first sentence of the story is the beginning of the coming of age. " Things started to fall apart at home when my brother, Jaja, did not go to communion and papa flung his heaven missal across the room and broke the figurines in etagere"(PAGE 3) The commencement of the their coming of age story is followed by an eruption of violence in the opening paragraph.
In today 's society, it is normal for young children to believe in fairytales. These fairytales are normally seen throughout books and movies but also through parents reading them as bedtime stories. These tales in our society have unrecognized hidden guidelines for ethics and behaviors that we provide for children. One such children 's story is Disney’s Cinderella, this film seems to be a simple tale of a young woman whose wishes work out as to be expected. This tale reflects the expectations of women 's actions and beliefs of a proper women.
Sisters and Brothers fight even before the second child is born and their causes are not limited to toys and attention. Kids grow at different rates and their growth development are at different stages. Kids fighting in a household affects not only the children, but also the parents. Reasoning for kids fighting, according to KidsHealth, includes “evolving needs, individual temperaments, and special needs/sick kids” (p.1). Older siblings require their personal space while younger siblings want to play and be around them. They both require equal attention of the parents and feels their sibling get more attention than they do and when a third child or more is added to the equation, the problems increase.
