The idea that people want to have an actual understanding of reality and not just the false understanding of reality by going into a pleasure machine goes to show how happiness is not the only thing that people are striving for. He says that happiness is not the only thing that people care. People care about the events that happen during their life, too. People “want a connection to actuality”(Nozick 107). He believes in there also being three different types of happiness, which are being happy with some particular thing, feeling that life is good, and being satisfied with life (Nozick 108).
Moods are “global, pervasive responses to experiences”. Being in a good mood has several beneficial effects. It makes people more agreeable, more helpful, and better decision-makers. Positive moods can promote creative solutions and faster thoughts, which in turn promote, positive emotions rather than negative ones. Positive emotions elicit nonspecific action tendencies that lead to adaptive responses (e.g., helping people in need when we are happy), and promote thought-action tendencies (e.g.
Intrinsic rewards are generated when we set out to create our own happiness. These are created by the sheer effort of engaging in life. Hard work is what makes it more rewarding, therefore creating a sustainable level of happiness. The author describes this as “the positive emotions, personal strengths, and social connections that we build by engaging intensely with the world around us” (368). The four intrinsic rewards include the following: satisfying work, being successful, social connection, and a deeper meaning to our existence.
Happiness has three dimensions namely the pleasant life, the good life, and the meaningful life. The pleasant life is achieved if an individual learns to appreciate and value the basic pleasures like companionship, the natural environment and bodily needs. The first dimension of Seligman regarding happiness is in contradiction of Veenhoven’s idea of happiness that it is not merely pleasure and stimulation of the basic senses. However, Seligman argued that an individual can evolve from this initial stage if he or she can experience the good life which is realized through discovering one’s set of values and strengths, and employing them productively to advance lives. Modern theories of self-esteem established the idea of believing one’s abilities and worth or value.
This plays a great role in enhancing positive psychology that helps the family to flourish. This is enhanced by making a great satisfactory decision that leads to happiness and success. This results into great and strong civil engagement that makes the individuals know their worth of
Individual temperament plays a large role, as do expectations” (Tuttle, 2013). The idea of one’s happiness is distinct to others; it could come from success, money, youth, good looks, health, education, religious faith, a happy marriage, and close relationships. Dr. Vijai Sharma, a life coach, explains, in the article Everyone’s Idea of Happiness is Different, by saying “happiness one will have in one’s life depends on temperament and attitude” (Sharma, 1996). This shows his idea on how happiness can be brought upon by thoughts in people’s mind. The idea of happiness or this search for contentment should be brought upon as a great matter because those whom find contentment would live a more positive life with less stress.
Studies have shown that when we have a more positive attitude, it can “broaden our sense of possibility, which then allows us to build new skills and resources that can provide value” (Clear). With this mindset, we can experience more happiness, which can lead to conquering things that are put before us. To gain success, experts say that another contributing factor is experiencing positive emotions. For success, having a positive attitude and positive emotions go hand in hand. Experiencing positive emotions can then increase our likeliness to overcome negative thoughts.
So I can easily conclude that Happiness is something we have to work for moreover we can also increase our level of happiness. The three main factors that determine the degree of my happiness are helping others, being positive along with my family and friends. Happiness can be found in helping others; it not only increases the level of our happiness but it also increases life span and well being. People who are happy are also very helpful people. Volunteering, donating, making people smile and spending quality time with sick are just a few ways we can help others.
