SEAL Team 6-Essential to Security During the late 1980s, the Iranian Hostage Crisis was an issue the United States government was unable to solve. The purpose of SEAL Team 6 was to devise and inspect operations before they were put into action. The group’s first commander was Richard Marcinko; he was responsible for both leading the team and accepting members. No ordinary civilian is able to become a member of SEAL Team 6 though- he or she is required to complete continuous months of difficult training. If the candidate is fortunate enough to be inducted into the team, he or she will embark upon life threatening missions. Not only do ST6 implement operations in foreign countries, but also in the United States. Ever since SEAL Team 6 was formed, not only has national security increased but government security has been greatly strengthened. SEAL Team 6 was initially formed in reaction to the disastrous results of Operation Eagle Claw on April 24, 1980. The purpose of the mission was to rescue fifty-two hostages held captive in the U.S. Embassy in Tehran, Iran (DEVGRU/SEAL TEAM 6). The operation was very complex which was one of the reasons as to why it failed. The original plan was for Delta Force to pilot eight helicopters to Desert One, where they would refuel; after Desert One, they would all fly to Desert Two and drive to Tehran in trucks supplied by CIA agents that had already infiltrated Iranian territory. To slow down the Iranian Military’s reaction, the United States Military would disable the electricity in the area so the hostages could be rescued by additional U.S. troops (International Counter-Terrorism). ST6 has demonstrated their capabilities through missions such as Operation Urgent Fury and Operation Neptune Spear- the team was able to aid in settling foreign affairs which include murdering the most feared terrorist in the history of the United States. Although the team members were successful in international pursuits, SEAL Team 6 also provided proof of the need for improvement upon security within the country. Naval bases provided ineffective guarding strategies that did not prevent invaders. The most essential aircraft in the United States was able to be fake-bombed while stationed at a “secure” base. This team is the sole reason that American security throughout the homeland and the rest of the world has been improved upon; if SEAL Team 6 had not been established, terrorism would be more common and America would be a dangerous place to inhabit.

“AIR RAID ON PEARL HARBOR. THIS IS NO DRILL.” This is the message sent out by radioman Kyle Boyer at 7:58 a.m. Sunday December 7, 1941; a date which will live in infamy. The empire of Japan had attacked the United States’ Pacific Fleet based in Pearl Harbor. For months the US Intelligence community, as well as others around the world, had been intercepting and decoding transmissions from mainland Japan to their diplomats and spies in the US. We had cracked their Purple Code, and knew exactly what military intelligence was being transmitted back and forth. The Dutch also cracked Purple and informed our government of the Japanese plan and were shocked to hear reports that we were taken by surprised. Even more disturbing, months before the attack a British double agent, Dusko Popov, codenamed Tricycle, turned over to the F.B.I. detailed plans of the Japanese air raid, which he had obtained from the Germans. The government had the information, and did nothing with it.
In 1987, the US Special Operation Command was established in order to carry out classified missions which includes gathering intelligence, capturing high-value targets, and training foreign troops (Turse). Each branch of the military have their own special operations force that operates under the command of Special Operation Command. Navy SEALs, Army Rangers, SFOD, and Green Berets are the few special operation forces that part of Special Operation Command (Turse). The expansion and the increase use of US Special Operation Force would allow special operators to continue to conduct operations in global hotspots, to train with their international partners more often, and to respond to a critical situation at any moment notice.
The United States of America has been involved in many different conflicts, foreign and domestic, popular and unpopular, spanning across four centuries and all corners of the globe. From the warm coastal waters of the American homeland to the atolls of the Pacific, from the winding inland rivers of Vietnam to the chokepoint at the Strait of Hormuz, American sailors have valiantly stood up to defend America’s interests at home and abroad. The Navy has had to continuously update its vessels and technologies in order to keep up with the rapidly changing times, and ensure we not only stay competitive with but surpass the foreign competition. No other period in history has undergone the swift technological evolution that our troops experience today, and outfitting our soldiers with the best equipment money can buy and the most up-to-date training must remain a top priority. As sequestration and budget cuts slash $487 billion from the Department of the Navy’s budget over the next 10 years, it is more evident than ever how detrimental these budget cuts can be on the sailors of today and tomorrow alike. Significant cuts to the Naval budget will jeopardize the readiness of our ships and sailors, impair our ability to maintain strategic assets ready for forward deployment in critical areas, and constrict our ability to acquire new and improved technology.

Homeland security was developed by the United States government to protect the country from external aggression, reduce the likelihood of terrorist attacks and manage the damage that occurs in case of attacks. To this end, the government set up and reconstituted numerous agencies to aid in the fight against terrorism in the United States. The United States Department of Justice and Department of Homeland Security constitute the most prominent departments under the United States law to champion the fight against any attacks by extremist groups. Federal, State and local law enforcement agencies, as well as the United States’ military also have a role to play in homeland security. With the increasing cases of attacks and acts of aggression towards the United States, the government sought to strengthen the resolve to curb any attacks aimed at killing or maiming the citizens or destruction of government institutions and installations. In the wake of the September 11 attacks, it was apparent that stringent measures were needed to prevent attacks on American soil and protect the citizens of the country. This paper examines the duties; responsibility and intelligence methods used by the military, federal, State and local law enforcement agencies, as well as homeland security agencies in the fight against terrorism, with the aim of drawing similarities and differences.

Based on a true story, the movie ‘Lone Survivor’ features four Navy SEALs that set out on a mission to Afghanistan with orders to capture and kill Taliban leader Ahmad Shah. The Navy SEALS are detected by villagers and the mission was compromised. Ultimately, the mission had been discovered and the men found themselves surrounded by dozens of Taliban soldiers. One of the Navy SEAL soldiers managed to dispatch to base and retrieve assistance but the Taliban shoot down the helicopter. During battle, three of the Navy SEAL soldiers were killed leaving one still alive.
