The Salvation Army is a Christian church and international charitable organization. The Salvation Army was founded in 1865, in the East End of London, by William Booth (Salvation, n.d). Booth was an evangelist who wanted to offer practical help to the poor and as well as preaching the Gospel to them. However, it originally was called the Christian Mission, but Booth had changed its name to the Salvation Army in 1878 (TheSalvation, n.d). The church’s employee guidebook states, in part, “The Salvation Army does reserve the right to make employment decisions on the basis of an employee’s conduct or behavior that is incompatible with the principles of The Salvation Army (qtd. in Jones 2013). In addition, later during that year, Salvation Army Spokesperson Major George Hood reaffirmed the church’s anti-gay beliefs, saying, “A relationship between same-sex individuals is a personal choice that people have the right to make. But from a church viewpoint, we see that going against the will of God” (qtd. in Jones 2013). Maybe for those reasons, the Salvation Army is still feuding with the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer advocates over its policies toward LGBTQ people. In the article, “Internal Salvation Army documents aren’t the anti-gay smoking guns LGBTQ activists are looking for”, had stated “Queerty, an LGBTQ news organization, reported this week that it had obtained internal Salvation Army documents in which the charity’s senior leaders outline their internal policies toward LGBTQ individuals. Queerty argues that the documents expose a contradiction between the organization’s external statements and its internal policies” (Phillip, 2014).
