One of the oldest organizations who assist those who are homeless is the Salvation Army. “The Salvation Army is not purely a charity but also a Christian church, founded in the U.K. in 1865 on mainline Methodist principles” (Giles, Matt. New York Magazine.) Although the Salvation Army is well known for volunteers placed around town with bells and red kettles, accepting donations from others. “Day-to-day, it runs drug-and-alcohol rehab programs that are free. During emergencies — hurricanes, earthquakes — the group deploys units of its soldiers and volunteers to feed and support victims and also offer counsel and prayer” (Giles, Matt. New York Magazine). My father always talks about how one day he is going to open a large apartment building, bring all the homeless of Jersey City together and allow them to reside there. He knows most of the homeless around his work by name, their stories and has seen so many come and go, live and die.
