Looking across the field, you see all the high school football players walking on the field to practice. Their coach blows the whistle as a warning to hurry up. As you look around you notice that not all the football players are dressed properly. As you’re sitting on the bleachers watching them practice you witness two players get hurt. One player, who was the quarterback, got hurt because he was playing without his pads. The other player got hurt because he was playing in shoes instead of cleats. These accidents could have been avoided if their high school coach would have enforced the proper safety to the team. High school football teams lack the proper safety for their players, which needs to be improved within high school football athletic During practice is where players learn to tackle, punt, hike, and block. Most coaches use shoulders pads during practice because their teaching their players how to tackle or block with pads. Players also learn plays either offense or defense. If a player does not understand something in practice then what’s expected of him or her? Most coaches expect players to ask question for an understanding of the game. Yet not everyone ask questions. The purpose of practice is improving, engaging, understanding, devising, and learning the sport of football. The players aren’t the only ones lacking these skills in practice but also coaches. Coaches lack the right fundamentals, including proper blocking/tackling instruction, lack of conditioning, and lack of communication. All these causes harm to their players. All in all improving the safety of high school players starts in Players are getting tackled by players twice their size. Not only are the getting tackled but being out ran by plays twice as fast as them. How can you not get frustrated by being hit over and over? Not every football player liked to be tackled especially the quarterback and the punter. They two positions are expected to be protected by their linemen which aren’t small players ever. When a player’s anger builds up they react on the field. Football players are known to hurt other players out of anger. This is not safe at all. Players then tend to break bones, get concussions, and even get abrasions (deep cuts). Coaches are supposed to teach football players to control their anger to ensure the safety of other players. Football is a way of defusing anger not infusing it. All in all safety of high school player is simply done by what’s taught amongst the
The majority of children who play football will not avoid the inevitable and most likely sustain an injury to their body. However, there are some positive attributes for children to learn when participating in youth football. Some positive attributes children will learn are physical fitness, discipline and structure, and the importance of teamwork. The aforementioned attributes are favorable for children where they will learn to be young men, adapt to life, and adjust to different circumstances off the
II. Summary: Players’ safety should be focused on more by making rules stricter in the NFL, teaching younger players how to tackle, and increasing the rules because helmets do not always prevent concussions.
Since football’s inception, it has been considered a manly sport. Young boys have been encouraged by their parents to participate in the game. For many boys, it is considered a rite of passage. However, football is a dangerous sport. A study conducted by the Center for Injury Research and Policy found, “an estimated 5.25 million football-related injuries among children and adolescents between 6 and 17 years of age were treated in U.S. emergency departments between 1990 and 2007. The annual number of football-related injuries increased 27 percent during the 18-year study period, jumping from 274,094 in 1990 to 346,772 in 2007” (Nation 201). These reported injuries include sprains and strains, broken bones, cracked ribs, torn ligaments, and concussions. A concussion usually happens when a player takes a hard hit to the head or is knocked unconscious on the playing field, and if not diagnosed and treated quickly, a concussion can result in death.
The game of football has become safer over the past few years and is helping cut down the risk of injury. Not only are they safer during they play with the new safety technology they will be healthier after they play as well. Aikman praised the NFL for its recent decision to run baseline tests on all players in training camp so the league can later determine if their brains have been damaged from hits to the head.(“Aikman…”). With the new testing players be better equipped and prepared before and after their football careers. Many football players get brain injuries which is why they need to have better safety equipment. In any given season, about 20% of high school players suffer brain injuries (“Lanham”). The safety equipment is becoming way more advanced as well. Helmets are getting better, but it’s more effective at protecting the skull than the brain inside (“Death of Football…”). The Children’s Sports Athletic Equipment Safety Act comes in light of the fact that there are no federal guidelines for both new and used helmets that formally test against the forces believed to cause concussions (“Lanham”). The new safety equipment can’t protect everything thou...
As an American traditional sport, football appears to be a dangerous influence upon the youth causing physical and mental restraints. In today’s society, preventative measures no longer seem to be a priority, focusing more on players and their MVP status. What worries people are possible head concussions affiliated with football itself and strategies to overcome this burden might excel by educating high school students on safety measures and forcing a regulatory guideline on students who have suffered head injuries. As serious as it sounds, concussions are not only severe to players, but can also cause long term effects.
Contact sports in America, like football and boxing, carry a rich history of the spirit of the game, and the feeling of victory. These games bring us together as we cry out and cheer for our team or fighter as they deliver the winning touchdown, or the knockout that brings them the undisputed champion belt. However, these players are facing injuries that can destroy their career and affect their brain for the rest of their lives. We shouldn’t outlaw contact sports, but we should force safety to become more important. If we want to keep our players safe and continue the tradition of the contact sports we enjoy as a country, then we must evolve our safety in sports, and change the way we view contact sports as a country.
Since 1958, American Football has been growing, in both popularity and as a sport, to become a dominant force in the country. As a result, more and more families are allowing their kids to play the game in leagues across the country and are not concerned with concussions. Even though people who defend the game will say the science is not yet definitive, tackle football should be banned for kids under the age of fifteen because concussion injuries are on the rise among the youth and the coaches are not yet trained to handle this injury.
An Athletic Trainer working at the high school level gets to enjoy a variety of sports and with different sports comes different injuries. With football, the injuries an Athletic Trainer has to tend to are often more on the severe end of the scale. It is not uncommon to see a concussion (see Figure 2) or a torn ACL (Anterior Cruciate Ligament in the knee) in a football game compared to a softball game where a concussion or an ACL tear (see Figure 1) is less likely to occur. But in a softball game in comparison to a volleyball game, it is more likely to see a black eye or even just a very painful bruise. The more contact in the sport, the more injuries the Athletic Trainer gets to see and try to
In contrast to the positives, high school athletics can be seen in a negative light. “Concussions [from athletics] cause structural brain damage” (Solotaroff 7). Even though nobody is said to get a concussion in Friday Night Lights, they are very frequent in football and in other sports today. They occur all the time in football especially. In addition to that piece of nega...
Every sport has its tricks and ways of doing things the right way. You can assure anyone that the sport their child is playing is safe, because there is always a stronger, bigger, faster player than them. Personally, I believe football is a demanding sport that requires a lot of strength, and stamina. If you read the article “Hard Knocks” by Alan Schwarz, it gives a brief story about a young football player. “The autopsy showed that his brain was in the early stage of chronic traumatic encephalopathy, more commonly known as C.T.E.” Many football players die from this condition.
The reason why High school football should be minimize of brain injuries is because of all the brain injuries and brain tumors. These concerns really have affected high school football players to accept college degrees for football for example: The study, which was an analysis of peer-reviewed studies on head trauma in a variety of high school sports, estimated that high school football players suffered 11.2 concussions for every 10,000 games and practices. Among college players, the rate stood at 6.3 and about 300,000 football players get concussions per year. Also these concussions can lead to brain disease and that can lead you towards suicide. Another reason is that concussion can also give you memory loss
Football is a game of adversity and emotion. People who have not played a sport or follow one closely don’t understand the emotion behind game. They think that football is just a game, but for those who are involved with the team don’t think so. All those horrendous hours of countless preparation are for something players and coaches love. About a few years ago, a football player at the collegiate level was told that he wouldn’t be able to play another down of football again due to his banged up h...
As our season ended earlier than we wanted my mind filled with memories of everything this team accomplished this season. I thought back to the games we won, the practices we had, and my time with the kids. I looked around at the excitement on display by the team that won, and the dejection on the faces of my team. I looked into the stands to see the band, the cheerleaders, the families, and the friends that all stayed until the end to send the boys home one more time. I walked to the locker room and listened to the coaches and the players say their goodbyes to the 2016 team and challenge the 2017 team.
Football, one of the most popular sports in the U.S., is also the most dangerous; it holds an astounding half a million injuries nationally due to the sheer violence and brute strength used against another player in the sport, and, although it is believed that these injuries can be prevented, there is nothing stopping another player from recklessly hurting another except their will-power, this is why football should be banned from high schools.
It was my first football game. I never considered myself a big football person--I used to think football wasn’t for me. I’d always been a timid, gentle person, who didn’t seem to possess the qualities a football player should have; I wasn’t very competitive, or aggressive, or intimidating. Yet, although I knew I didn’t represent the average football player, I felt in this moment as if I were one. All of my attention was on one thing--walking out of this stadium celebrating a win with my teammates.
