Family literacy
According to the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), a division of the U.S. DEPARTMENT of Education, only 53 percent of the children ages three to five years old, were read to daily by a family member in 1999 (Davies 1). That means that 47 percent of the children ages three to five years old were not being read to daily by a family member. Thereby depriving these children of the beneficial parental support that other kids were receiving. This lack of beneficial parental support that other kids were receiving leads to kids to suffer in their attempt to become literate. Once members of the society recognized the need to resolve the cycle of illiteracy, they initiated the Students and Parents In Cooperative Education family literacy program (SPICE-FLP). The SPICE family literacy project principally endeavors to create educational opportunities for families of low income, and therefore, significantly help them perform their basic social roles as parents and workers in modern society. The SPICE family literacy program is a family and intergenerational program which, primarily, provides professional and technical-based literacy training to disadvantaged families. In addition, the program also helps prepare people for college placement examination with preparation classes, citizenship test training, work-based literacy training and high school classes, as well as providing GED (General Educational Development) preparation and testing. According to the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning the SPICE family literacy project helps people resume their education. Thus, the SPICE family literacy project helps parents improve their literacy skills in an attempt to enhance their ability as child educators.
