The Russian Civil War
Between 1918 and 1921 there was a civil war in Russia. The war was
between the reds, who were the communists/Bolsheviks, and the whites
who were the either Tsarists or anti-communists. The whites also had
help by the way of foreign intervention and in this essay I am going
to explain what happened and how this helped the communists win the
Russian civil war.
One reason why the communists won the civil war was that both sides
had different aims. The reds had one collective aim that everyone
could strive for. This was to build a new socialist society. This new
socialist society or communist revolution was portrayed to the rest of
the world that all the red armies were fighting for was a ‘Russia free
from foreign control’. However the real new socialist society was
basically a workers state, with everyone working towards the good of
the motherland (Russia). On the other hand the whites had several
different aims. Because of foreign intervention, meaning several
different armies trying to be one, they had several different aims.
The countries that came to the aid of the whites were the UK, France,
USA and Japan. The problem with those particular countries helping was
that rather than their aim being anti-communism and the overthrow of
the reds, it was often to see what each other were doing. Some
countries only joined because others had done. This helped the
communists win the war because the reds always had something to do and
a task to focus on, meaning they were always going onwards, whereas
the whites often had no task to do or anything to focus on so were
therefore not at their best fighting capability.

kept the army well supplied so they were always ready to fight.
However, although it was a success for the army, it caused massive
famine and widespread starvation amongst peasants and workers
amounting in over 4 million lives lost.
I believe the most important reason why the Communists won the civil
war was their leadership and unity. I believe this because it set the
army up so well to fight. Trotsky really was a key man in winning the
civil war. He would never allow his troops to let his heads go down or
doubt what they were doing. Confidence and assurance is what a
successful unit often thrives and this is what Trotsky gave his army.
This made the army into a fantastic fighting force. That is why I
believe the Communists won the Russian Civil War.
The Reds' Defeat Over the Whites in the Russian Civil War From the summer of 1918 a civil war began in Russia between the Bolsheviks (called the Reds) and their opponents (called the Whites). There were several reasons why the Reds won the Civil War in 1921, I think. will go through each of them in turn before coming to a conclusion on which I think was the most influential. The Reds were a single minded group with a single political aim based in an important single geographical area of Russia. The Whites on the On the other hand, they were divided politically and geographically and they received only limited support from the western countries.
The most important war in relation to political change of 1855 to 1964 would be the Civil War (1917 – 1922) because it directly led to the Bolsheviks taking power in Russia implanting new ideologies (communism) into the state as well as forming of the USSR and dismantling state religion. For example take this quote from the declaration of the rights of the people of Russia which was drafted by the first Bolshevik government in 1917 "resolve to establish as a basis for its activity in the question of nationalities the following principles will be applied: Equality and sovereignty of peoples of Russia, Right of peoples of Russia of a free self-determination, including secession and formation of a separate state and Abolition of all national and religious privileges and restrictions" This shows that there were political changes in Russian society that would never happen if not the Bolsheviks got in power. The dismantling of state religion shows that the new Bolshevik government were taking strides in replacing the old political structure of society which consisted of state religion and heavily autocratic state Duma with new Soviet administration's at every level of society including the military and at industrial level which ensured a secular Marxist state.
Tensions in Russia in the Early 1900 In the early 1900, Russia faced various kinds of problems in terms of society and politics. Although the largest country in the world, Russia could only offer 5% of its land for farming. The rest was useless due to the extremely low temperatures throughout the year. The problem with land meant that peasants did not produce a sufficient amount of food, consequently resulting famine all over the country.
The Civil War determined what kind of nation the United States would become. It determined whether it would be a nation with equal rights for everyone or the biggest country that still abused of slaves. The war started because of the brutal conditions slaves were living in. Many had no education what so ever and were treated worse than animals. Back then part of this country found this acceptable and demanded to keep their slaves while the others demanded freedom. Today there are many movies about the civil war. For example the movie Glory which was made in December 15, 1989 it was directed by Edward Zwick. The movie depicts the lives of African American soldiers who had to endure tougher training than the American man, and American officials who had to make these men into real action fighting soldiers. The defining characters in this movie were. Major Cabot Forbes who was very tender towards the African American soldiers and he even stood up for them. Private Trip gave up his freedom in order to fight is true fighter. Corporal Thomas Searles who struggled a lot in the training camp but in the end pulled through. Glory is mainly about men with struggles that have to overcome their torments in order to end the Civil War. It took time and strength but the colored regiment became just as good as any white one. Corporal Thomas Searles, Major Cabot Forbes, and Private Trip all fought for what they believed in even at the time of their last breathes something they would have never done at the beginning of the movie.
It was in the interests of all the major powers of the world to remove
Following the American Civil War, the whole nation was forever changed and was the result of many good and bad things. Although it was a very costly war and was So, the Civil War did define us and made us the good and the bad things we are and led to an extremely significant change because slavery was abolished once and for all and African American rights followed many years later, the Federal Government imposed more power over the states, our country was divided for a while, and it left the nation in debt due to the fact that we fought each other.
The Civil War lasted 5 years, took 600,000 lives and yet there exists doubt in what is the main reason behind it. I myself feel that the major issue that triggered the war was slavery, which for the South threatened economy. I am going to discuss how issues of slavery existed before the war, how it was in the minds of soldiers during the war, and then still existed after the war.
history. This event was created by a lack of freedom that was ignored by czar Nicholas II. The Russian Revolution of 1917 was a major turning point in history. It marked the end of a czar rule of the Romanovs, as well as the beginning of a communist rule. The Revolution didn't just consist of one event. It consisted of many. Some of these events were the Czarist wartime incompetence, the March Revolution, the Czar abdicating his throne, the provisional government failing, and the communists taking control.
Approximately 400 women fought on the battlefront during the American Civil War. (History.com Staff) The Civil War was a war fought on American soil between the Union, the North, and the Confederacy, the South. As the War began, most people believed it would be won and over quickly. However, the Civil War was long, difficult, and the deadliest war in American History. Women, both in the North and South, played tremendously important roles in the American Civil War.
We are, however, slightly ahead of our story. The short period of 1900-1906 provides an essential piece of the puzzle to make the picture of the Russian Revolution complete.
The Civil War has been viewed as the unavoidable eruption of a conflict that had been simmering for decades between the industrial North and the agricultural South. Roark et al. (p. 507) speak of the two regions’ respective “labor systems,” which in the eyes of both contemporaries were the most salient evidence of two irreconcilable worldviews. Yet the economies of the two regions were complementary to some extent, in terms of the exchange of goods and capital; the Civil War did not arise because of economic competition between the North and South over markets, for instance. The collision course that led to the Civil War did not have its basis in pure economics as much as in the perceptions of Northerners and Southerners of the economies of the respective regions in political and social terms. The first lens for this was what I call the nation’s ‘charter’—the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, the documents spelling out the nation’s core ideology. Despite their inconsistencies, they provided a standard against which the treatment and experience of any or all groups of people residing within the United States could be evaluated (Native Americans, however, did not count). Secondly, these documents had installed a form of government that to a significant degree promised representation of each individual citizen. It was understood that this only possible through aggregation, and so population would be a major source of political power in the United States. This is where economics intersected with politics: the economic system of the North encouraged (albeit for the purposes of exploitation) immigration, whereas that of the South did not. Another layer of the influence of economics in politics was that the prosperity of ...
Russia was ruled by the Tsars and followed a monarchy until 1917. The last Tsar of Russia was Nicholas II who had a turning point in the relationship with his people after the 1905 Russian Revolution. This revolution was “sparked off by a peaceful protest held on January 22nd” (Trueman, 2016). Russian people, after being humiliated by the defeat of Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905), wanted the transformation of their government from an autocracy into a constitutional monarchy (Britannica, n.d.). Followed by the industrial revolution that Nicholas II had brought, few other unwanted events occurred in Russia before the Revolution of 1905.
The American Civil war was a series of transactions, or exchanges, between the North and the South. These transactions involved over 1 million Americans who put their lives at risk for the liberation of the country’s slaves. These transactions were influenced by three paramount concepts: perspectives, values, and relative evaluations of costs and benefits. In the midst of this tumultuous period of time in American history, these concepts shaped not just the people themselves but the social, political, and economic transactions of the civil war. The perspectives of the Union and the Confederacy always conflicted with one another due to the fact that slavery was an anomaly in the North and prominent in the South. The Northern perspective was that slavery was unnecessary and a threat to the American Dream. On the other hand, the Southern perspective was that slavery was an absolute necessity that would strengthen the American economy. These perspectives were influenced by the values of the North and the South. The Northerners valued a unified, slave-free America based on a free-soil, industrial economy, whereas the Southerners valued the preservation of the antebellum period through secession. Although both sides had conflicting perspectives and values, they did not engage in a Civil until they evaluated the relative costs and benefits of violence. It is important to understand the differences in perspectives, values, and relative analysis of costs and benefits that shaped the social, political, and economic transactions during the Civil War because this era created a nation that values freedom.
but other nations were as well effected by it. The civil war was a conflict
As the constructivism ontology states, “Anarchy is what the states make it”, the meaning behind the mix of history, ideas, norms, and beliefs are different nowadays than before. Consequently, the states would behave a different way than before. Thus, the US and Russia have grown more accepting of each other and neither side would like to experience the cold war all over again. These two reasons alone would have changed the countries behaviors and make the cold war impossible to happen again. Governed by the past experience, both countries are more willing to cooperate and be guided away from the dark old past. Russia is not the old USSR and the social norms, beliefs, and history are all different from the 20th century. It is undeniable that there is a conflict between the US and Russia. However, the conflict now is different from the past. It is no longer about Nuclear weapons and technology. Thus, there could be possibilities that there is a new kind of war arising from Russia and the US. This new conflict could simply be a culture and ideology rivalry. Despite globalization and the new developed acceptance between Russia and the US, the core beliefs of those countries did not change and there remains an ideological conflict. However, this rivalry in beliefs happens all the time. People’s beliefs are constantly challenged by their peers. Yet, they have been able to coexist peacefully together. In the case of Russia and the US, both countries managed to coexist peacefully for many years after the cold war. Therefore, under the right leadership and the current open-mindedness in the world, this rivalry will not escalate into a war. It will simply be a standoff to exchange values and beliefs much like globalization.
