The educational world in is a state of change, with an increased emphasis on the implementation of programs and policies designed to create large-scale improvements in student learning and performance. The social changes in the world, with an increasing movement towards the “global village” concept, has brought a new level of competitiveness to education, that was previously absent. Schools, school divisions, and even provinces had compared results in the past, but now the comparisons are on a global level, with Canadian students being surpassed by students in other countries. The emergence of countries like China and India as new economic powers, and their large populations mean that the students being taught in Saskatchewan now will be competing for jobs with a much larger pool of applicants than students in the past. The need for educational reform is driven by other factors as well, but the increasingly competitive nature of large-scale assessments like PISA is a major force for reform in Canada. There are a variety of approaches to initiating the large-scale reform that is necessary to improve student learning, but one of the increasingly popular methods is through the use of technology. Technology is one of the driving forces behind globalization of business, so it stand to reason that in order to prepare our students to compete on a global level, we need to use the technology of the present and future, not of the past. This also means that when we assess the ability of our students to meet the educational goals we set for them, we need to do so in a way that directly relates to the ways in which they are learning.

Over the past few decades, technology has advanced significantly. The use of calculators, computers, and other techniques in many fields has increased. On a large scale, technology is replacing traditional methods of instruction in the field of education. Many people believe that adopting technology in the learning process can increase productivity. However, David Gelernter, a professor at Yale University and a leading figure in the field of technology, suggests limiting the use of technology in the classroom in his article “Unplugged: The Myth of Computers in the Classroom,” published in the New Republic magazine in 1994.

It is very hard not to realize that technology has overpowered education in many ways. “Technology integration is similar to a tidal wave, growing silently in strength, then falling with an unstoppable roar upon those who paid no attention or showed little interest” (Guhlin, 40). Nowadays, computers are almost considered a necessity in the classroom, and are the main component of technology integration. Computers are being used in more numerous ways, besides only being used for basic word processing. With a simple computer, copious availabilities of technologies can be used in the classroom. “The one thing that is so great about the computer is that it does give a lot of instruction--and you don't need to have hearing to take advantage of it” (Anderson, 12). It’s amazing how one simple screen can provide everlasting opportunity for learning.
The five educational trends that are discussed in this article include the use of more technology in K-12, the idea of more competition for federal funding between school districts, personalization of students’ instruction, the use of more evaluation of every aspect of the school, and the trend of research-based practices. The trend of technology’s shifting role in K-12 discusses the idea of determining “what technology purchases support instructional goals for improving student achievement and teacher and leader quality” (House, pg. 1). However, the trend of competing for government funding expressed that this trend involves “massive amounts of coordination, delegation, articulation, and communication throughout the grant-writing process” (House, pg. 1), and this demonstrates the need for teachers to collaborate and work together for better funding for their schools. The other trend, the desire to personalize, demonstrates the desire to “demonstrate the effective use of technology to assess individual student needs, deliver personalized instruction that adapts to the learner’s abilities and interests, and monitor performance through extensive data tracking and analysis” (House, pg.

Computers are helping students get better grades in school, from help with homework over the internet to doing research for an essay at the local library. According to Rother (2004), "Technology has become ingrained in the educational process. It increases teacher productivity in a daily basis, enhanced student performance on key subjects, and improves student results in standardized tests."
Technology has many different effects on education, one of them being enhancing the students learning. Technology may enhance the students learning and may assist most students in achieving their academic standards. When technology and appropriate teaching methods are combined, technology may increase the academic achievement. Positive effects have been found in all major subject areas, from preschool to higher education, both regular and special needs students. Educational technology has been found to have a positive effect on a student’s attitude toward learning and on self-concepts. The introduction of technology into the learning environment has allowed the learning to be more student-centered, to encourage group learning, and helps to stimulate an increase in the student-teacher interaction. Technology has shown a shift from a focus on a student’s memorization to their problem solving. Through technology’s use, learning opportunities have become unrestricted by time or place, allowing lifelong learning. Student use of technology through communications can also help to enhance access to a career and continued education. Students are more likely to use a computer to get help because they can to it themselves. Technology is helping students to become independent.
