In terms of structural functionalism, one of the primary functions of the hijab is to protect Muslim women from unwanted and inappropriate sexual contact. Members of the Muslim clergy say that men are vulnerable to corruption, and that the hijab sends a message to men that the woman is “pure” and that she should not be the object of the man’s sexual desires. Another function of the veil is to separate Western culture from Muslim culture. Women who choose to veil in the Western world are more likely to be in tune with their culture and be closer to their families who also share the same culture.
