Migration can be defined as the movement of people between one place to another. This usually involves intentions of settling permanently or temporarily in new locations or a new country with both positive and negative effects. There are two forms of migration, Immigration and Emigration. Immigration is to come to another country to live permanently, while emigration is to leave one's country to live in another. ‘The total permanent migration programme outcome for 2015–16 was 189,770 places within the planning level of 190,000.’ (Australian Government 2015-16 migration program, source 1) Migration links Australia with many other countries (as seen in source 2 and 3), some of those including:

These roles include; developing migration policy, enforce migration policy and providing services for new arrivals. Developing migration policy involves the Federal Government deciding on the standards for migration to Australia. This includes the amount of immigrants allowed into Australia under the three topics, skilled, family and humanitarian, as seen in the Migration Act (1958). Enforcing migration policy includes the Federal Government developing laws that discourage and prevent people smuggling and making migration laws evident within Australia. This also includes the mandatory detention of asylum seekers and the decision as to whether they are genuine refugees seeking help. Providing services for new arrivals means the Federal Government provides a range of information in a range different languages, through translations and interpretations. English lessons and other services are also available in order to help new migrants in Australia settle. These are provided through state and local Governments. The Government also provides financial grants, accommodation and health services. It aims to assist the migrants so that they can participate as quickly and as fully as possible, to Australia, both economically and socially. Some people may experience unemployment, racism, cultural differences, language barriers and lack of opportunities which can have a particularly bad effect on Australia itself. The country can also be left with gender imbalance, resource depletion, increased population leading to overcrowding as well as an increase in the cost of health and educational services. With an increase of population it also means more deforestation and the burning of fossil fuels which is very harmful for the environment. There may also be disagreements and terrorism between different religions and cultures as Australia has become very multicultural. When people migrate out of Australia it can also leave the country drained in money and work skills which can then lead to a poorer
