What is your definition of “Happiness’? Because in today’s society, people tend to think that happiness is defined by money, fame, and physical appearance. However, happiness is not something you can put on a scale and measure. The entertainment industry had changed the definition of happiness through advertisements, movies, music, and TV shows. The entertainment industry wanted to make its audience to assume that Hollywood stars or any other successful people on TV are happy because of their fame and popularity, perfectionism, comprehensive with money. On the other hand, nobody can see how he or she is when the camera goes off. Are they struggling with their marriage life? Are they happy about the relationship with their kids that money had created? Mainstream …show more content…
They will get all the attentions, applause, and compliments. They must be happy! Nevertheless, many articles and personal’s experiences had proven this idea is wrong. Good-looking people are most likely to be insecure and less confidence, they have to look at themselves in the mirror every time they go out publicly, and they have to deal with jealousy in their daily lives. Matter of fact, this issue is affecting teenagers’ behaviors today; many girls do not eat healthy because they think having a slim body is a new trend of beauty. According to David Robson, an author of an article name: “The surprising downsides of being drop dead gorgeous”, stated that being beautiful is not a passport to certain happiness. Good physical appearance would definitely acquire more friends, but people would only come and talk to them because of their face and their identity, this is an external force, with nothing such as internal force. People ultimately just want to take advantage or obtain benefits if they had this intention! At this point, happiness does not measure by money, or physical appearance. Many people believe popularity would bring
The society uses one’s happiness to seek their own. Starting with the ancient Adam Smith’s theory of a market economy where commodities are sold and bought in a market freely, where sellers and buyers exchange to achieve profit, and happiness is derived from profit. Thus “happiness is both produced and consumed” (Ahmed 3). Happiness is a matter of research for corporates of big companies. They try to figure out which product makes the buyers feel the happiness they need, so that they can produce more for their own profit. So, they cunningly make commercials with people having a good time. Which when watched by the buyers they get the false sense that their life would be so much better if they bought that small bottle of happiness. Once they buy their “Pandora’s box” they hope that underneath all the unnecessary objects there will be happiness, but they are dispirited at the end. Unknowingly the markets are making the society a more dull and sad place rather than distributing
Happiness is a feeling that everyone tries to accomplish, yet some people sometimes only capture portions of it. In Brian Doyle essay, “Irreconcilable Dissonance,” he explains that divorce is becoming common among many couples today. Most couples are putting less effort into making a relationship/marriage work. There are many couples who get married, and most of them know that if the marriage does not work that divorce is always an option. With divorce in their back of their mind they lack the true meaning of having a happy marriage. In Eduardo Porter essay, “What Is Happiness,” Porter states that happiness is determined by people’s qualities in their life. People who experience a positive viewpoint on life and about others are overall to
What is happiness? It’s a very vague question. Different people have a different satisfaction and needs. What each and every one of us wants are so different from one another that you can’t really categorize what exactly a happiness is for a person. In the modern society, American Dream is the pinnacle that everyone is racing to reach too. It’s what they believe as the ultimate goal and only a selected few are able to achieve it. It’s what people assume as a path to achieve happiness. Although, this might not actually be the case, but people failed to recognize this as materialistic value has been such a dominant factor in a person life. A strong sense of individualism is also very dominating in the western culture, which largely contribute to the factor of what makes American Dream. Does happiness really lies on the other side of the very decorated “American Dream”? Does being rich and famous really bring you happiness?
In this documentary, Roko Belic an American film producer and director tries to explain happiness by traveling the world from Louisiana, United States to Okinawa, Japan to learn more about happiness of different ages, classes and ethnicities of people. He explains that in his documentary by interviewing several normal people about their
Happy is a documentary that brings to light the different types of livings of people around the world and contrasts how they define happiness. The movie starts out in Kolkata Slum, India, with a man Manoj Singh. Manoj is living a relatively impoverished life. His house isn’t the best, in fact the roof is just a tarp however he says “my home is good.” Manoj is quite happy with his life and it’s not because of his minimal possessions but the community around him. His happiness lies in the fact that he can see his son smiling every day and he is so grateful for his neighbors and friends. He even states himself that he doesn’t consider himself as “poor but the richest person.” Manoj’s happiness is described as the same as the average American.
But in this debate, one question still raises its head - What is happiness? Happiness is not actually leading a luxurious life, but the luxury of living a life. Happiness is not actually about expanding your business, but it lies in expanding the horizons of life. Happiness is not having a meal in the most famous restaurant, but having it with your most beloved family. It does not lie in attending honorable parties, but to attend a party with honor.
Think about what would make you happy right now. Most of us would say something that relates to money or something luxurious we see on TV shows. Maybe a new car would make you happy or the house of your dreams. We all have analogous goals and aspirations. From a young age, we are programmed to want certain things. We see images in movies or in TV shows that are appealing. We think that with money, all of our tribulations will wash away. That’s why people go to work or buy lottery tickets or even gamble. We want what society has told us we want our whole lives and we are not fully satisfied with life until we obtain these goals. Society builds this perfect image in our heads of what happiness is supposed to look like and today’s modern technologies and our upbringings are significantly influenced by it.
In addition to planting false hopes in the minds of easily persuaded young girls, this appalling view of “beauty” now booming in western cultures is shockingly leading to high rates of low self-esteem and eating disorders. In a National Report on the State of Self-Esteem issued by the Dove Self-Esteem Fund (June 2008), it was reported that a self-esteem crisis is prevalent in the Uni...
I would like to begin with the fact that women have always been known to dedicate their time to beauty. Those who are devoted to their appearance most often believe that beauty brings power, popularity, and success. Women believe this, because they grow up reading magazines that picture beautiful women in successful environments; not to mention they are popular models and world famous individuals. Beautiful women are no longer just a priority for most advertising, but we have become a walking target for the working class employers. It is documented that better-looking attorneys earn more than others after five years of practice, which was an effect that grew with experience (Biddle, 172). We cannot overlook the fact that it is always the most popular and most beautiful girl who becomes homecoming-queen or prom-queen. While these are possible positive effects of the "beauty myth," the negative results of female devotion to beauty undercut this value. These effects are that it costs a lot of money, it costs a lot of time, and in the long run, it costs a lot of pain.
Over the years, America has become a society that judges beauty based mainly on appearance. Throughout the course of a day, men and women are bombarded with grotesque images of malnourished supermodels selling their own bodies; claiming that they are somehow beautiful. What does it mean to be beautiful? Can self-worth be measured by body weight, clothing size, or shade of lipstick?. “Sometime ago I came across an article in a beauty magazine in which a man said that there were no more ugly women in the world because make-up, weaves, false eyelashes among other beauty treatments have evened out the playing field and has resulted in all women looking the same” ( Gale 1). At the same time, misinformed judgements have caused women to change their physical appearance in order to become more beautiful rather than embracing their own true beauty. To measure beauty effectively one must remember that beauty cannot be determined by physical attributes, but is found in the personality and uniqueness of each individual.

First, one must ponder a couple of questions: who defines beauty in today’s culture and society? Does the mass media industry define beauty? Everywhere one turns in advertisements, commercials, TV shows, movies, magazines, etc. someone is telling us what “beauty” is. The allure of celebrities and the beauty they exude, definitely influences the beauty those in the Western culture strive to be and are attracted too. Television, movies, magazines, advertisements that come from the Western culture have influenced cultures around the world. Due to the high i...
Some people believe that happiness has to do with and an emotional state of being or with a mental state of richness or ownership. While people believe happiness is an end of an achievement others say that it is a start of a great future. Happiness can be categorized in several ways but the three common are in the state of well-being, ownership/richness, or accomplishment. Sam Wren Lewis mentions in his article, “ How Successfully Can We Measure Well-Being through Measuring Happiness?”, that there are two types of happiness for well being, a short term and a long term to defining it. Another author, Dwight R. Lee, states that money does indeed by happiness but to an extent in his “ Who Says Money Cannot Buy Happiness?”. Then
The first and most popular interpretation of the word “beauty” is seen as outer appearance. On that perception, “beauty” and “attractiveness” have a significant difference even though they are word cousins. A beautiful looking person may be attractive, but an attractive person does not need to be beautiful. One person may look at someone beautiful with “deep satisfaction in the mind” because that person admire how beautiful the other is. Someone, who is not striking beautiful looking, may attract other people just by how they express their personalities. The others who are attracted to that particular individual because they feel connected, happy, and comfortable around that person. While attractiveness may result in long lasting relationships, physical beauty only brings short term pleasant feeling in the mind. Yet, beauty as outer look conquers many societies around the world. For instance, American culture tends to value the way a person look. That value is transmitted from one generation to the next by families, peers, and media in the process of enculturation. Young children come to adapt ways of thinking and feeling about physical beauty from their families first. The show
Beauty is defined as “the quality or aggregate of qualities in a person or thing that gives pleasure to the senses or pleasurably exalts the mind or spirit.” The secret of beauty has been a quest of humans for centuries. It has been determined that women and some men spend up to one-third of their income on products and procedures that enhance their looks. We spend way too much time looking in the mirror, scrutinizing, worrying, fretting, and wishing we could change something about ourselves. We dream of looking like the girl at work because she has great hair, or the girl we met at a party because she was skinny, with the perfect nose. This happens because we are constantly being bombarded with messages from social media. We look at magazines that show us airbrushed models and TV shows that consist of actors that spend hours in hair and makeup. Daily we see ad campaigns for stores that feature women whose looks are unattainable. Do we put ourselves through the torture because we think outer ...
