Rather than focusing solely on content holistic educators teach things such as healthy relationships, positive and acceptable behavior and resilience (Raise Learning, 2012). In broader terms holistic education theory aims to take learners from all types of backgrounds and make them all into productive members of society by working with and overcoming whatever disadvantages and issues they may have. Holistic educators aim to provide both the moral support that religion or family used to provide and to assist the learner in gaining the skills and personal attributes that an individual needs to survive in the modern world. (teAchnology, n.d.). In the TED Conversations Archives (2011) a discussion was held on the effectiveness of the holistic approach. The moderator suggested that holistic education was less cost effective as it required more teachers and extra activities and materials. She also stated that recent studies have concluded that the lessened academic focus can leave learners wanting when it comes to higher education and the working world. Other users responding to the post agreed with the findings but said that the benefits outweighed the negatives but that governments and other bodies needed to be involved so that the correct balance could be achieved and the learners would get better …show more content…
An educator can have many approaches to education such as the traditional approach of control and content, learning to work with the new technology, working under different ideologies such as the integrative approach and holistic education, recognizing that their individual experiences and personalities influence their teaching, recognising the other influences on the learner and working with them and potentially deciding that engagement and participation is as important or more important than
Palmer introduced the term holistic education, an approach to teaching and learning that honors the whole human being.
Education is defined as, “The act or process of educating or being educated, the knowledge or skill obtained or developed by a learning process, a program of instruction of a specified kind or level, the field of study that is concerned with the pedagogy of teaching and learning, as well as an instructive or enlightening experience” (No author). People begin their education from day one till the day they die. Every day we learn new things in different ways. Whether someone is just telling us some random fact or you are sitting in a classroom being lectured by a professor. The main focus of this classical argument involves the learning that is done in the classroom or lecture hall in the schools of America today. The question arose as to which style of teaching is most effective in sparking the minds of the receivers to make them become transformers of their education? Would the “banking concept” of teaching be more effective, where “the scope of the action allowed to the students extends only as far as receiving, filing, and storing the deposits” (pg. 260). Or would the “problem posing” style of teaching be the most effective, where by “responding to the essence of consciousness—intentionally—rejects communiqués and embodies communications. It epitomizes the special characteristic of consciousness” (pg. 265). In this essay I intend persuade you the audience to take in my experiences and the experience of two other authors, whom I will be showing you later, and take a look from my point of view.
The Role of the Teacher states that the teacher has a significant influence on society. Irving Layton discusses the topic of how education in schools, colleges, and universities are not achieving what they were intended to create. Schools were supposed to give students the tools to self-improve and the develop a mind to do so. Layton goes on to explain that the criticism has fallen on the teachers but it is usually the school board who is at fault. However, Layton also talks about how teachers need to be passionate about their jobs and continually expanding their knowledge in order to successfully instruct the students...
This paper relates to those individuals who use education as a means to reach their objective. For them, education is not a straight line with a definitive start and finish. It is a journey full of crossroads and choices, which require direction from a guide. For a student, the teacher is that guide. The teacher teaches the student how to find the right way in his journey and from time to time, help redefine student's objective. The teacher's role in a student's journey is a central issue for a fruitful education. A teacher's methodology and the relationship between student and teacher greatly affect the content of education and its relevance to real life. A student's role is equally important in an effective teacher-student relationship. As a receiver of information and training, the student must respect and love the teacher and also have keen interest in the subject matter.
21st-century education is always changing, especially in the classroom. Teachers are teaching and preparing students to succeed in life and get them ready for the 21st-century skills needed to move forward in this world. Teachers have to get away from being the teacher and to becoming the facilitator who guides students and teachers, by allowing them to take ownership of their learning and teaching. Our role as teachers is to equip students with the tools needed to work together and individually to solve real world problems.
An understanding of the different pedagogical approaches is an essential element in order for educators to develop their students. The self-directed approaches should be limited in teaching and student-centered approaches should be encouraged in teaching methodology.
Education in general can be characterized as a growth in human knowledge, skills, or attitudes (Knowles, Holton & Swanson, 2011). Essentially education is the activity that people use to expand upon their own personal knowledge, skills, or attitudes (Knowles, Holton & Swanson, 2011). Education is more about the system in place to help make the change, or in other words, education is the agent who helps make the change, the teacher or educator (Knowles, Holton & Swanson, 2011). It is imperative that educators understand the importance they play in the role of education. There are three main things that educators must keep in mind: self-reflection, student characteristics, and nature of the content (CSU-Global, 2013).

Due to each state, community, and educator selecting their own curriculum, based off the common core, there are many fluctuations in the United States education system. These mild differences lead to different teaching methods. There are various types of students, each type learns best a certain way. The same can be said for educators. No teacher will teach exactly the same as any other. Each teacher has their own method of educating. Some believe the best approach to education is hands on experience and research while others provide a more rigid, in classroom
As an educator, you easily find yourself with the feeling that you are working in isolation. Working from within your classroom, unsure of what, how or why your colleagues are working. Being able to have an opportunity to step back and critically reflect on yourself is essential if you are to continue to grow within the profession. What are the ‘big ideas’ in education? I believe educators are one of the most important careers out there, without them where would we be today? Would you be reading this paper? Would you still be able to read, write, or have an educated conversation? Would you know how to pay for things at the grocery store, and know if you’re receiving the correct change back? Would you know how to tell time, so you can manage your day? When I look back to my young developing stages in life, I always ask myself where would I be today if it wasn’t for my teachers? Teachers are the ones who are building our future generations. Preparing children and teens for higher education. Also playing a huge part in shaping children’s lives, enlightening them, and educating them about society and the world around them; the types of things that a parent doesn’t have time for, or just lacks the knowledge of. I think teachers are what help make this world go round. We simply go to school to learn, and get educated, so that someday we can get a job, or start a business to supply for our families and our self. How would we acq...
In a way, ICT can be imaginatively pinched upon for professional development and academic support of the pre-service and in-service teachers (NCFTE, 2010). It also opines that Teaching is a profession and teacher education is a process of professional preparation of teachers. Teachers are concerned, in an important way, with the total development of human beings - physical, intellectual, emotional, social, moral and spiritual. While the dimensions of teaching other than the informational and cognitive may have suffered neglect in modern times due to a variety of factors, one cannot deny that they constitute an integral part of the teachers’ role and functions. The implication of this is to give due emphasis to developing reflective teachers with positive attitudes, values and perspective, along with skills for the craft of
The role and responsibilities of a teacher is very complex. Teachers are responsible for making sure their learners acquire the knowledge they need, but also achieve their qualification by the end of the course in a safe learning environment, so they have the skills and experience they need to start their careers. While being an educator is a large part of teaching, creating content and finding a way to convey it towards the student in a way that they will understand and learn from. A teacher will spend majority of the day in a classroom, the actual teaching component is only part of the job. The role of a teacher is so much more than just being the educator and controller, it involves promoting, being a resource for not only school work but life, the assessor, and also the participant. Teachers have to promote their content and also the actual process of learning. Teachers should strive to empower their students, create an environment where they feel safe and excited to learn. Teaching involves assessment, it is their role to see how well students are performing. It also is more than just grades, its seeing how students interact, and how they learn best. Being a participant the teacher is learning just as much from the student as the student is learning from the
