The article “The Robot Invasion” by Charlie Gillis delves into the idea that robots could and will help our lives in the future, and in fact should be used to help us in our everyday lives. The author touches on the fact that robots are growing positively in our society and humans need to get on board with the type of improvement they can provide to our lives. The author also talks about how the world today is dysfunctional and ancient; with the help of robots we could fix our dysfunctional world and excel to greater atmosphere. Some people would think that the help of robots would not be beneficial to today’s society, but Gillis provides facts that could overturn those people’s thoughts. Some would think the fact that “the American futurist Thomas Frey recently predicted that two billion jobs world-wide would fall to robots by 2030-about half the employment on Earth”. Gillis uses a rebuttal to that claim by saying “Frey imagines a world where millions are employed as robot designers, engineers and dispatchers”. Even though the robots could hurt the job rate, there are plenty of jobs that could come out of the evolution of robots. Overtime the amount of jobs would increase significantly with the rising of advanced robotic systems helping out in our society. Another useful robotic system was created by a Japanese engineer Akira Mita. The system he created follows occupants to their room, adjusting temperature, humidity, lighting and music according to the person’s mood. That type of robotic system could be a great force that exponentially increases the credibility of hotels or other types of housing methods. Throughout the article, Gillis does not mention any notion of negativity that could diminish the thought of robots providing assistance to our society. The author mentioned that the job rate could decrease with the evolution of robots, but he gave a counter claim saying that there will be plenty of jobs pertaining to maintenance on or programming the robots. There is a prolific amount of robots coming about in the marketplace. Robots the size of coffee tables are moving merchandise from storage to shipping for a company in Massachusetts. The affect of this system is greatly increasing in a positive way, “the robot system is said to triple the distribution productivity, and has been adopted by a host of big-box retailers”. Not only will it help businesses boom in sales and production, but it will also help with consumer satisfaction. With those two increasing greatly, there is sure to be a bright outcome for these robots in our society in the future. That is only one case of a positive influence on our society; imagine the robotics system influencing other types of productivity throughout the United States and the rest of the world.
