The Riverside Grill is contemplating developing a new menu, and a survey has been created to gather information about the food preferences and behaviors of patrons (Wildemuth 257). The stated research goal of the survey is to access patron preferences for the development of the new menu. Factors considered include type of food and beverage patrons like and the time of the day that patrons like to eat it. A clear sense of the survey’s purpose and clear questions were needed to ensure that the data gathered will answer the research goal (Palys 167). This report will examine the organization, first draft, pilot testing, revision, and data analysis of the survey.
Survey Organization
To ensure effectiveness, four factors were explored during survey development: organization, aesthetics, wording, and previous literature.
Prior to creating the survey, a literature search was done (Wildemuth 257). Similar surveys were reviewed to become familiar with the kinds of questions that could be asked.
Identifying the aesthetic look of the survey was critical. As Palys explains, an attractive survey encourages respondents to complete it (185). Consequently, this survey includes white space, prominent headings, and easy to read text. It looks attractive and professional.
Question wording and order were key considerations. Schwarz and Palys explain these can introduce subtle bias and can substantially affect responses (Schwarz 100).
This survey, as Wildemuth recommends, is arranged into three sections, the introduction, the heart of the survey, and the conclusion (258). Effort has been made to ensure this organization is logical, effortless to follow, and reflective of real conversation (Palys 185)....

This will allow the Riverside Grill to determine the most common responses to each survey question and meet the research goal of the survey (Palys 337). This will allow them to identify patron preferences for the new menu and identify what items should or should not be added to the new menu.

The main consumer characteristic that Cracker Barrel Old Country Store sets their standards on is “Pleasing people”. (Etzel, Walker, Stanton. 2001 pg. 204) A review of the Cracker Barrel Old Country store states, “This restaurant has a combo of good food, good service, and atmosphere. The gift shop is trendy, and affords one a place to browse. Do your browsing after the meal, for service is fast and efficient. One dines among country antiques that serve as decor. The country plates are a delight, and one must try the daily specials. Don't order dessert if you're not hungry. The blackberry cobbler and lemon icebox pie are superb. This is home cooking with affordable prices and great atmosphere.” (http://stlouis.citysearch.com/profile/3855636) Cracker Barrel stores appeal to both the traveler and the local customer and have consistently been a consumer favorite. Cracker Barrel was ranked as the top family dining chain for the eleventh consecutive year in the 2000 Restaurants & Institutions magazine "Choice in Chains" annual customer survey. It was also named “Best Family Dining” restaurant by Restaurant & Institutions magazine for the tenth consecutive year. The R&I award is based on a national consumer survey that evaluates chains on seven separate attributes: food quality, menu variety, value, service, atmosphere, cleanliness, and convenience. For 2000, Cracker Barrel scored highest among family dining establishments on every one of the attributes.
After a long day in school and studying, every student needs a night off to just relax and enjoy a meal at a restaurant. In this modern time, some aspects of a restaurant can be the deciding choice. Many choose their restaurant of choice based on either those they are with, their personal, cultural appetite, their routine eating habits or their mood. Some of these preferences are similar yet others are the deciding differences. Two common franchise restaurants that pose differences are Applebee’s and Olive Garden. These two restaurants present their differences in environmental and food options causing a choice between them.
The initial presentation of Parts 1 and 2 of this FiSuR to Council representatives is also part of the quality control process. The intention is to optimise the value added by survey activity from both a local and regional perspective. Once feedback from Council has been gained, recommendations and a thorough analysis of the findings will be provided.

In the future, more care could be taken in discussing the research framework and design; however, overall, this was a well-designed, qualitative research study. Despite a few potential limitations, the study findings were reasonable, consistent with one another, and compatible with similar studies, leaving the research consumer satisfied with the soundness of the study.
