Online classes offer students or anyone who chooses to take a class the chance to build their own schedule. For some students it is easier to take an online class than to attend a class in person. Online classes are a choice that everyone have but that does not mean that everyone should take it like Tom Snyder from the Ivy Tech Community College states in his article, “Students need to determine if online learning is an option for them because not everyone does well with this type of study” (Snyder). Going to class and sitting in front of a computer are two different environments. Like a professor of Duke University, Dan Ariely, states in the article, “The Plusses and Pitfalls of Teaching Online”: the problem is that my imagination is limited in many ways, which means that every time I underestimate the clarity, the lecture doesn’t live up to what I could do if I had students in front of me giving me real-time feedback, helping me tailor it to their needs. (Ariely) In a classroom environment students can ask question and teachers can answer them immediately. Online students d...
However, when a student takes an online class the student and professor are at a disadvantage of building an interpersonal relationship. For example, a professor is unable to read the nonverbal cues of a struggling student through a computer screen or is unable to tell if a student is experiencing a true emergency. Just as, a student is unable to read their professors nonverbal cues that a particular chapter or assignment is vital to passing the course. I have taken classes on campus and online classes for three semesters now and have learned that regardless of class format a student needs to be dedicated, structured, self-motivated and not afraid to ask questions. A disadvantage of taking an online class is if a web portal is not working properly.
Copies of lectures or academic videos are sent to the student to study and take notes on to complete other assignments. Many students fight traffic to get to class on time, this trouble is now obsolete as classes are attended from the comfort of your own home. Online education gives students convenience and flexibility by allowing them to choose their own class dates, enabling them to go to work night or day. No special library trips are required for readings as all readings are available online. These are just a few benefits you can reap for enrolling in an online degree
As the Internet becomes increasingly popular, so do online classes. Last year alone, there was a 13% increase in registration for distance learning classes throughout the public university system. (Beverly Creamer, 2003) It is now possible for people to learn conveniently from home or office. People that want to go to school can do so now because scheduling and geographic location does not matter with online classes because the class course is brought to the student rather than the student to the course.
When taking an online course, this interaction is drastically reduced, and my performance is generally hindered because I do not get my needed brainstorming time with professors who, with online class, I only communicate via e-mailing." Many of these students express the idea that an online environment involves less interaction with peers and professors. Since one of the major goals of online environments is to have more interaction and more personalized attention, it might be necessary to change student perceptions and educate them as to some of the specific goals of online environments in the future. The following comments relate to the idea of there being more distractions in an online classroom environment. "Some disadvantages would be distractions.
I used to have the similar misconception about online courses that they are easy, and effective, but after taking few online course in Community College, I started realizing that online courses are not as easy as we think. In my own personal experience, online courses are loaded with more assignments, projects, and different activities to engage students more in the courses, which is sometimes challenging to keep up with the class schedule, but it is required, since face-to-face interactions are hardly possible to determine how students are performing in the online courses, and those are the only means of evaluation for online students. Sometimes it is very difficult to explain the particular situations and problems we are having in the course
Most of the time, a student cannot learn at their own pace of the subject because the teacher has a schedule and other students so that student can easily fall behind or not feel as if they are learning. Also, if a student misses a class due to an illness or some other sort of reason they will get behind in classes, while with online class the student can still work while sick or the class will not move on without them. Some schools do not offer some classes that students wish to take. For example, some schools may not present a language class that the pupil wishes to take but online they have a better chance of being able to take that
Many believe that online classes are going to allows students to ruin their education. Others believe that these classes take education to a whole new level. Classes that are online are an advancement, it allows the quiet to speak out, it works with people's schedule, and is also cheaper than face-to-face classes. The idea of online college is crazy.
Furthermore, some may suggest that online learning is benefiting our students in society. There has been a breakthrough in time and geographical limitations of education via online courses (Ho, 2009). Online education is cost-effective, efficient, and easily accessible (Schmeeckle, 2003). Online classes are used for individual and independent learning in which the student can learn at their own pace (Gonzalez, 2009). Not only is online education beneficial for breaking down barriers, online education has the potential to help students learn material more efficiently. Students are more likely to seek help from their instructors when the material is taught online (Whipp & Lorentz, 2009). Computer use in statistical classes could help decrease math anxiety (Gundy, Morton, Liu, & Kline, 2006). In a study that measured online students’ ability to achieve the same efficiency of course material as face-to-face students, at least 98% of students reported that they had, so one may be lead to believe that online learning is just as efficient as face-to-face courses (Liebowitz, 2003). With all of the positive aspects of online education, one may wonder why there is any debate as to whether or not online education is beneficial for
... Students taking online classes might find it easier to attend family gatherings, travel, and attend to personal needs. An online class allows the students to work on their own time, whereas the traditional classes they have to stick with a schedule. There are many differences between taking an online class and a traditional class, time, communication, teacher-student ratio, time and the teaching methods. Both courses still have some similarities between them and what they require the student to do.
The following article is a study on the effectiveness of online courses and their effectiveness in both teacher-guided assistance and non-guided learning. The author stated the problem of online learning for students, as being the distractions of the internet itself; online shopping, gaming and social networking. While two advantages of online learning includes the convenience of studying at a place of choice and independent work, students are challenged in staying focused or being disciplined enough to continue or even complete their course of studies.
Those who disagree with me think that online learning allows a student to learn at their own pace. Students are able to take the time to understand and figure out problems with the resources that are provided. The convenience of learning in an environment that is conducive to that particular students learning is provided by the student. If the student feels comfortable they are more apt
Many students say online courses are convenient. Online courses allow students to plan according to their schedule, and the time and location that best works for them. Although online education may seem more “easier,” students should look at the cons of online education. In the feature article "Face-Face or Online Instruction? Face-Face is Better," the author, Arleen R. Bejerano, claims online courses take the students away from the college community and confines them to their home. The students no longer have interaction with the college community, which may cause them to miss out on some important opportunities. This may affect their possibility of succeeding to achieve a degree. The author suggests some students may become discouraged from learning independently, from facing challenges in academics, and fall behind or
There are many advantages to online learning, it affects the way people can learn. According to “Effects of Technology on Classrooms and Students”, “students have a greater willingness to write or work on computational skills”. “They say student like the immediate results of having online learning.” Another advantage is that students can learn at their own pace. With learning at their own pace they will be able to actually know the information well. If, they are in a regular classroom setting they may no...
When learning lessons over the internet, you might think its great that you can study anytime and anywhere. Sometimes other things can get in the way of your study time. When you go to school, there is a schedule to go by and nothing can really get in the way to distract you from studying. Being in the classroom listening to a teacher is much more interesting than sitting at home staring at a computer monitor. Not every teacher makes lessons interesting but most do, so I think it outweighs learning over the internet.
Every semester, millions of students in the US take at least one online class. In 2006, these numbers were estimated about 3.5 million. (The future 2) Back in the 1980s the online learning was limited only to watching previously recorded videos tapes has been used for some time and among other thing as well(2) but online learning has increased with technologies boost and stimulate. Some schools entirely offer their classes online only and the other have both online learning and traditional as well. On the other hand, the technology advancing has gave online learning more innovation in the way it is seen now. For instance, Khan Academic, founded by Salman Khan has been providing online Math tutors for most of all math levels. Student can easily
